Five Gators Land on Freshmen All-SEC Team

The Gators lost their head coach when Urban Meyer resigned on Wednesday, but the talent pool in Gainesville is still deep. After a five-loss regular season, the Gators led the conference by placing five members on the Freshman All-SEC Team that was released by the league Thursday afternoon.

Florida's five selections led the conference, while Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee each had four.

The five Gators selected were all-purpose athlete Trey Burton, defensive lineman Sharrif Floyd, linebacker Ronald Powell, linebacker Jelani Jenkins and return specialist Andre Debose.

Burton was 4-for-5 passing this season for 83 yards and one interception. He rushed the ball 73 times for 347 yards and 11 touchdowns. Burton also caught 30 passes for 188 yards and one touchdown. He was used as the short yardage quarterback for most of the season, subbing in as the main quarterback when the Gators were in the red zone.

Debose took over as the primary kickoff returner against LSU in the sixth game of the season. The redshirt freshman didn't waste any time making his presence felt, as he returned a kickoff for a touchdown late in the game that cut the LSU lead to one touchdown. Debose returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown against South Carolina. With two kickoff returns for a touchdown, Debose tied the school's career record in his freshman season. He also added ten catches for 96 yards.

Jenkins finished the regular season second on the team with 73 tackles. He added four tackles for loss, totaling in 21 yards lost. Jenkins was tied for third on the team with two sacks. He also had one interception, coming off LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson, with a 47-yard return. Jenkins also had one pass breakup, one quarterback hurry and one fumble recovery.

Powell moved from defensive end to outside linebacker during the early part of the season in an effort to add some size to the linebacker position. He ended the season tied for tenth with 24 tackles. Powell had three tackles for a loss. He added one sack and one quarterback hurry.

Floyd ended the season tied for 13th on the team with 21 tackles. Seven of those tackles came for a loss. He was a fixture in the backfield on run plays, breaking through the interior of the offensive line to drop the running back soon after he took the handoff. Floyd added one quarterback hurry.
