Florida got some good news this week when veteran pitcher Jamie Goldfarb returned to action Wednesday against FAMU. He threw a scoreless ninth and can not only bolster the bullpen but could move into a starters role later in the season. Speaking of starters, the rotation of Sanabria, Hoyman and Madsen swept Tennessee last weekend. Don't be surprised if you see Coach McMahon continue to move it around based on opponents and scouting reports in the conference schedule. Mike Pete will still get some starts this season as will Conner Falkenbach. Florida has won five in a row in the conference and is the only SEC East team with a record above .500. The Gators defeated FAMU 14-2 in a mid week game in which was added to the schedule after all the rainouts in February. The Gators travel to Vanderbilt this weekend and have not won a road game this season losing in Tallahassee and Baton Rouge.
Matt Bonner won another award this week taking home the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar Athlete award, the highest honor a student athlete can receive in the SEC. He had a 3.98 GPA and will receive a post graduate scholarship. Florida looks to open it's season next year against Arizona in one of those tip off classics. The word on the street is David Lee will be back next season even though he has hinted he may consider turning pro. Look for Florida to add a big man to this year's incoming freshman class. The final analysis with UF's season simply boils down to this - when the three pointers were not going down the team let it effect the other areas of it's game. This did not happen often but more so down the stretch against good competition. lly Donovan would like to see his team "grind" it out more in bad shooting stretches by doing the little things such as defending, rebounding and getting loose balls.
Football:BR> Ingle Martin has looked the best so far at quarterback and he and Gavin Dickey have separated themselves from Patrick Dosh. Look for those two to get the most of the repetitions the next week and a half, including the spring game. Gavin is the better passer but Ingle has shown great decision making skills and leadership. The wide receivers have been a little disappointing including returners Carlos Perez and Kelvin Kight. Perez is coming off an injury but both have been inconsistent. Right now Keiwan Ratliff is the best receiver, with Dallas Baker, OJ Small and Jemalle Cornelius next up. Look for Andre Caldwell to get right into the mix this fall. Another concern has been the defense and it's inability to provide much resistance in the running game. The defensive line is not where they would like it to be and will definitely have to improve before the opener. Obviously, Marcus Thomas will get into the mix this fall and look for UF to play as many as five guys on the inside. Finally, Florida has worked a lot on special teams in the spring and when Eric Wilbur gets on campus he will be the punter. The depth at defensive back as well as receiver has given more options in the return and cover game.
Jaquez Green was released by Detroit this week and makes you wonder if this is the end of the road. Fred Taylor is at voluntary workouts in Jacksonville with his new contract and appears to finally be a full health and happy. Shane Matthews is not concerned about the recent signing of Jim Miller in Tampa. Miller and Matthews were teammates in Chicago, but Shane still feels he will be Brad Johnson's top backup. He is going through quarterback camp with Gruden right now and really likes Gruden's attention to detail. Matthews would like to get into coaching after his playing career. Emmitt Smith will be honored at the Orange and Blue game next weekend. Emmitt really wanted to be in Tampa to finish his career but apparently a power struggle between Gruden and Rich Mckay cost him to end up in Arizona.
