Gators Try to Get Offense on Track vs. JU

Returning five starters from last season that all averaged double-digit points, the Gators didn't expect to struggle putting up points this year. Instead, the perimeter jump shots aren't falling and every game turns into a physical battle.

To Florida's credit, the offensive slump has forced them to turn up the defensive pressure.

The Gators are holding opponents to 40.1 percent shooting from the field this season. Only two opponents have gone over 60 points against Florida this season, one being Florida Atlantic in a 79-66 win for the Gators. Ohio State's 93 points is the highest all year.

The Gators are giving up 50.4 points per game in their last five contests. With all the impressive defensive statistics, it's tough to find one better than what they did to No. 6 Kansas State on Saturday.

The 57-44 Florida win was the first time since 1968 that the Gators have held a ranked team under 50 points. The only loss for Kansas State coming into the game was against No. 1 Duke.

The defense has played well, but it doesn't stop there. When the opposition's shot goes up, it's rare that they get another chance. The Gators have been effective on the boards, outrebounding nine of their ten opponents this season. Florida averages a plus-6.9 margin in rebounding.

Florida tries to continue its success Monday afternoon when Jacksonville University wraps up a three-game road trip in Gainesville at 1 p.m. The Dolphins are 6-3, their best start since 2000-2001, when they started the season 7-0.

Forward Ayron Hardy is averaging 12.6 points and seven rebounds per game. The senior is only 46 points away from being the 27th player in Jacksonville history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.

Hardy is their only starter that averages double figures, while the Gators have three. The Dolphins' second leading scorer is forward Glenn Powell, averaging 9.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

Monday's game could be decided by the rebounding margin. The Dolphins are 5-1 this year when outrebounding their opponent.

The Dolphins picked up a big win against an SEC opponent earlier this season. They defeated Auburn 73-66 on the road on November 27.
