Top Gator Stories of 2010 -- Part 1

Now that the holidays are behind us, the bowl season has played out and all eyes are on the second half of this school year, we thought it would be a good time to take a look at the year that was. Florida certainly had an interesting time of it in calendar year 2010, which saw the end of a great Gator playing career early in the year and the end of a great coaching career at the end.

This week we will take you back through the year with the top 15 stories of 2010. Obviously our judgment is subject to your scrutiny. What would this site be like without that?

No. 15 A fast start to 2010-11 All-Sports --- The new school year began the way many Gator sports years have begun, with Florida women setting the tone for SEC competition. Florida won three SEC titles this fall, all by women's squads. The Gator Soccer team won its fifth straight SEC crown, defeating South Carolina on the road in the regular season finale with the league title on the line. Mary Wise got her Volleyball team back on track, claiming her 19th SEC title in 20 years. The Gators totally dominated the league winning all 20 matches. And the women's Cross Country team made it two in a row for coach Todd Morgan. That's a helluva start towards dominating the SEC All-Sports standings yet again.

No. 14 Gymnastics team wins SEC, struggles at NCAA --- Rhonda Faehn has a perennial contender in the toughest gymnastics conference in the country and her team claimed its second title on her watch by winning the event over in Jacksonville. They followed up with a win in the NCAA Regionals and were given a great shot at winning the school's first NCAA Championship when they hosted the event in April. However, the Gators had too many little errors and UCLA was simply too good. It's not often a No. 5 finish in the NCAA can be viewed as a disappointment but this one was. However Florida was two wobbles from finishing second in the closest NCAA scoring on record.

No. 13 Denver trades up to grab Tim Tebow --- From the time his career ended, Tim Tebow was the talk of the upcoming NFL draft. Some people, like me felt the Jacksonville Jaguars should do whatever it took to get Tebow in their uniform. Others are insistent that Tebow's game will never translate to the NFL. Denver and coach Josh McDaniel decided Tebow was well worth the risk and traded up to grab the Florida superstar. Tebow was a tourist for most of his rookie year, but did produce pretty significant numbers while starting the final three games of the season scoring and passing for a TD in each contest.

Well, our review of the year is underway. Tomorrow, two stories from the gridiron and another All-Sports angle.
