Gators Impress Top 2012 CB Howard

The University of Florida has had a lot of success with defensive backs from South Florida and would like to continue that pipeline that eventually leads to the NFL. Along those lines, the Gators are eyeballing one of the best in the class of 2012, with cornerback Tracy Howard of Miramar. Early reports have Howard as one of the top three prospects overall and one of the best DB's in the area.

Tracy Howard is busy with his spring semester in school at Miramar and is busy running track where he is an established member of the school's 4x100 relay team. A new member of reigning Badger Sport's 7-on-7 national champion South Florida Express, Howard likes the recruiting process and enjoys interacting with several college coaches.

One of the coaches that Howard has been in constant contact with is Florida's new defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson. Robinson grew up in South Florida, so he has a natural relationship that develops with some of the prospects down there.

"I talk to him a lot and he tells me I could come in early and help them out," Howard said of Florida's new coach. "He says I will have a chance to play, but he doesn't guarantee a spot, he says I would have to come in and compete.

"I have called him a few times. I think he is very cool and down to earth. I did a background check on him and he is from the same area I am from. He even goes to the same barber shop. He knows a lot of people I know."

Howard also knows that recruiting from Florida means recruiting the best players in the country. Therefore, when a guy like Robinson comes calling, and coaching in an aggressive Will Muschamp defense, that has to mean something big. At 5-11, 170, his build as a junior makes him a prototype of what the Gators are looking for.

"Coach Robinson says I am very athletic and as athletic as anyone he's seen by far," he said. "He likes that I jam, because that is what they want from the corners. They are very aggressive. He just says I would fit in great.

Of course a prospect like Howard is going to have more than just Florida on his heels. With approximately 12 verbal offers already, the schools are starting to add up with one other one in particular coming at him hard as well.

"Florida State is coming after me hard, even Jimbo Fisher came by the school," Howard said. "Miami is going through some changes, but they are back on me pretty hard now. West Virginia is recruiting me pretty hard also."

Florida and FSU seem to be doing the most work and Howard compared the two right now.

"Both staffs are very aggressive, but Florida's staff seems more down to earth to me," he said. "Coach Travaris is so cool, I just feel like I have known him for a long time. I think both of them are recruiting me about the same but it seems that Florida has been more aggressive."

Howard feels good about his recruitment so far, but after talking with the Miramar head coach, they have decided to take their time and make a decision sometime during the football season. In the meantime, we will be following Tracy Howard's recruitment closely.
