Nelson Agholor…Straight Up Athlete

Try and ask Nelson Agholor what position he will play in college and you will not get a real answer. Truth told, he doesn't know and he doesn't care at this point. He wants to play football and he expects to do it at a high level just as he is doing it now. The Tampa Berkley Prep star is focused on school and his different sports, and will let all of that work itself out.

Nelson Agholor is a special athlete who shines with the ball in his hands. The ball may be oblong or round, either way, he just wants to play.

"I am in the middle of basketball season and play point guard," he told last week. "We are doing well, and No. 1 seed in the conference. We are getting ready to go into the postseason."

Agholor has high hopes for his basketball team, one that is loaded with juniors and looks to even be better in another year.

"We started out as a young team and have carried the same group of guys for two years," he said. "We all work well as a team and actually we have a lot of juniors, 2012 came on strong and we just have to keep it going."

While he loves basketball, football is the sport he will be using as a means to get his education by getting a college scholarship. He's good enough for the high school all-star games but realizes his schedule has hindered him making those teams right now.

"I was invited to both the Under Armour and Army combines but due to me playing basketball I couldn't make it," he said. "It is a goal to make it to one of those showcase games. I am just competitive, whatever I can compete in that is what I will do. Football is the sport I will stick with in college and whatever else I do."

Offense or defense, at this point in time he doesn't care where he will end up. That will sort itself out at the right time.

"That hasn't shown itself yet," he said about what position he might play in college. "I am being recruited as an athlete. This year some positions stood out but not too far ahead of the others, so I just have to see how it goes. It seemed like every other game a different position showed itself.

"I play running back at the high school level and play receiver also. I also play corner and safety. Teams are recruiting me as running back, receiver, or defensive back. Every school I come in contact with is just as confused as I am."

The fact that college coaches can't pigeonhole him into a certain position tells you what you really need to know about Agholor. The college coaches that watch him understand that he gives perfect effort every time he steps on the field and that is what they are coming to recruit.

"They just like my competitiveness," Agholor says of the talks he has had with college coaches. "They like that I have all the traits …the ability to work, learn, and will to not lose. That is what I want everyone to know about me and what I think the coaches are seeing. I have above average speed, but I can be faster, strength wise I can be stronger."

He currently has offers from USF, Florida, USC, Notre Dame, Georgia, UCLA, and Duke among others. He's also a good student. Nelson Agholor is one of the nation's best and we will be following him as much as we can this recruiting cycle. Stay tuned.
