Position Changes and Pre-Spring Depth Charts

Will Muschamp and his staff released a pre-spring depth chart at Monday's press conference, but he was quick to point out that nothing was concrete. The Gators have a big spring ahead of them and staff and players have a lot to learn about each other. The Florida head coach also announced some position changes and spoke about the future of the Florida defense.

"I've given a depth chart out today, and I don't know if that depth chart is worth the paper it's printed on," Muschamp said. "It's a starting point for us, we are a new staff and a lot of guesswork being done based on film from last year and our evaluation through our five week off season program, so a lot of guesswork."

The Florida depth chart on the defensive side saw some position changes, with the main one including Gerald Christian moving from fullback/tight end to linebacker. Christian played linebacker at Dwyer High School, and head coach Jack Daniels spoke with Muschamp about the move.

Christian will still take some snaps at fullback, but his main role will come on the defensive side of the ball.

"I think from a size and speed standpoint and lower body explosion, at the Sam linebacker, the critical factors for us at that position is a guy that's got to play on the end of the line," Muschamp said. "So you have to be able to matchup against the tight ends in our league. He's got length. He's a heavy handed guy, strong, lower body punch and power and you have to play stack linebacker and you have to play off the ball and be an instinctive linebacker."

The move will add depth to the linebacker position. Muschamp said that the base defense will remain 4-3, but they will use some 3-4 principles in it.

Another player who has been speculated about is Chris Martin, who sat out last season after transferring from Cal before playing a game. He was listed on the depth chart at defensive end because of pass rushing skills that make him special.

"I think he was will pass rush skills and good pass rush ability and can move his hands and feet in the rush and that's a natural talent and not easily coached, and he's a got good length," Muschamp said. He's going to worry about how we tell him to play."

Leon Orr has been moved to the defensive side of the ball, where the Gators desperately need big bodies on the inside. Florida lacks a true nose tackle when they choose to run a 3-4, and Orr could prove to be that player.

"For a couple position changes from last season, Leon Orr has moved to defensive tackle," Muschamp said. "Athletically he's a guy that's a bigger body guy that can hold the point, especially with some of the two back run teams we are going to face, felt like he was suited for that and we will take a look at that."

Josh Shaw didn't see the field last season, but he will move from cornerback to safety. The numbers at cornerback are much better than at safety, and Shaw has the frame to play as a free safety.

"We are looking for guys who have length and can get their hands on guys," Florida defensive coordinator Dan Quinn said. "That's where we would like to try him first at safety and we felt like he would fit in there, and some guys playing safety, we thought it would be an easy fit for him."

Jordan Reed has been moved from quarterback to tight end only. His athleticism will give Charlie Weis' offense a chance to use Reed to stretch the field vertically.

Trey Burton will also move from quarterback, but his role isn't as clearly defined. He will be used on offense in multiple ways.

Players who weren't on the depth chart and will be limited this spring include Omar Hunter, Jaye Howard, Kedric Johnson, Jaylen Watkins, Matt Patchan, David Young and James Wilson.

The players who will be held out for the entire spring are Janoris Jenkins, Neiron Ball, Mike Blakely and Jeff Demps.
