Baseball Takes Series with 8-4 Game Three Win

An 11 hit attack and a four RBI performance from C.J. Smith allowed the University of Florida baseball team (28-12-1, 8-9-1 SEC) to win a key league series over Georgia (19-20, 4-14 SEC) Sunday with a 8-4 victory in Athens.

Starting pitcher Christian Madson improved to 3-1 as he went five innings and gave up just four hits and two runs (one earned) with a walk and four strikeouts. Madson retired the final seven batters he faced before giving way to Adam Sanabria. Sanabria would go 2.1 innings and gave up one hit before Connor Falkenbach finished the game by pitching 1.2 innings in closing out the victory.

Georgia would threaten in the ninth loading the bases with one out. A single and sacrifice fly scored two runs but Falkenbach got the final batter of the game to fly out to left.

A four run Gator fourth allowed UF to seize the lead for good. Florida knocked Georgia starter Mickey Westphal out of the game in the inning as they took a 6-2 advantage. Westphal would take the loss as he went 3.1 innings and gave up seven hits and six runs with four walks.

The Gators quickly loaded the bases in the fourth on three straight singles by Jeff Corsaletti, Fritz Reichardt and Matt Graziano. After a fielder's choice groundout, Ben Harrison picked up an RBI with a single to left. Jonathan Tucker and Dowdy then drew back-to-back RBI walks before another RBI single from Rose.

Florida took a 2-0 lead in the first, an advantage that would not stand as Georgia scored a run in each the second and third innings. After a pair of outs to start the game the two out rally started with a Brett Dowdy single to center. Brian Rose was walked and Smith provided a big hit as he tripled in both runs with a shot down the right field line.

Georgia responded in bottom of the next inning as Marshall Szabo's bloop double scored Justin McClain who earlier reached with an infield single. The Bulldogs then tied the game at two as David Coffey hit a one out single through the right side in the third. Coffey then crossed home plate as Lee Mitchell's double was bobbled in the outfield allowing the tying run to score.

Smith added a two-run homer the opposite way in the seventh. Dowdy recorded his third hit of the game to lead off the inning before Smith's 14th long ball of 2003. Dowdy also scored twice with an RBI in going 3-for-4 in the game.

  • The Smith triple in the first was his first of the season and the seventh Florida triple in 2003.
  • Florida won their third SEC series of the season.
  • The Gators have won three of the last four series against the Bulldogs in Athens.
  • Dowdy reached base in all three games of the series to run his consecutive games reaching base to all 41 Florida contests. Dowdy was 6-of-11 in the three-game set.
  • Florida improved to 8-1-1 in Sunday games.
