McCray Has Easy Adjustment to BUCK

The BUCK in Will Muschamp's defense is one of the terms that will get thrown around a lot when talking about the Gators. A hybrid linebacker/defensive end, the BUCK will move from a three-point stance to standing up as an outside linebacker from play-to-play sometimes. Junior Lerentee McCray will be at the position and says he loves it and it fits what he has already been doing.

Hearing it from Lerentee McCray himself, you would think it is all fun and games playing in Florida's defense right now. The junior from nearby Dunnellon says the BUCK position is something he can thrive in.

"I love practice, it's real fun," McCray told the media last week. "I love the new defense… I am lining up at defensive end, linebacker, primarily the BUCK position. I have played both over my career, so it is pretty easy to adjust to both. I like the position because it gives me the versatility to play both."

The BUCK will move to a stand up position when the Gators switch to a 3-4 from their base 4-3. The defensive end just becomes a fourth linebacker that can still rush the quarterback or drop back into coverage if need be.

"It is really like the 4-3, it all just depends on how the offense reads the defense," McCray said. "It gives us a lot of versatility to understand the offense and where they will run the ball."

The Gators have a new defensive coordinator and with that comes a new style of teaching the game. McCray really likes what Dan Quinn brings to the team as a coordinator.

"I love Coach Quinn," he said. "He coaches the mess out of us. I love that aspect of him. He is coaching me real hard.

McCray has gotten a little praise from Muschamp already this spring and believes he is in for a solid year.

"I just want to go out and compete," he said. "I expect myself to go out and have a good year."

Lerentee McCray isn't one that most fans are counting on to bring something to the Florida defense, but he has the tools to be an excellent player in this attacking style. He'll be fun to watch as his career progresses.
