Three Gators Named SEC Freshman of the Week

The Gators played well this weekend in most sports, but the headlines were stolen by freshmen. Florida baseball, basketball and softball combined for a 6-1 record and got strong performance from their first-year players.

Brad Beal continued to play well down the stretch for the Florida basketball team. The guard averaged 17.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals in road wins over Alabama and Arkansas. Beal scored 21 points on Saturday at Arkansas to record the fourth 20-point point game of his season.

It started on Friday night for Florida freshman catcher Taylor Gushue. He hit a home run on the first pitch he saw in his collegiate career. Gushue, who started as the designated hitter twice this weekend, went 2-7 over the weekend with the home run and a two-run triple that gave the Gators a lead for good in Saturday's series-clinching win.

Gushue enrolled at Florida in January, skipping his senior season at Calvary Christian Academy to play for the Gators this year.

On the softball diamond, Lauren Haeger moved to 3-0 on the mound this season while recording two of Florida's four wins last week. She struck out 12 hitters in 11 innings of work where she allowed four earned runs.

Haeger also made her impact felt at the plate. She drove in seven runs in the four games and hit two home runs in that span. She currently leads the Florida team with 15 RBIs on the season. Haeger has reached base in all nine of Florida's games this season.
