2014 OL Martinez Soaked in The Swamp

He is pretty easy to spot in the stands even among the elite football players he might be surrounded by. At 6' 4.75" and 296 pounds, Corey Martinez is already a monster, even if he is still just a high school sophomore. The Tampa Catholic star offensive tackle was on hand in The Swamp for the Orange and Blue Debut and quite easy to spot in the south end zone. He liked what he saw last Saturday.

Tampa Catholic has been rolling the stars out lately and Florida already has two on the roster with sophomores-to-be Chaz Green at offensive tackle and fullback Hunter Joyer. Corey Martinez is the next in line and Martinez says he is looking forward to his junior season in 2012. "Our team this year is looking great," he said. "We will be putting in some new stuff which I'm looking forward to."

The Florida coaches have been on him a little while and the interest seems to be increasing quite a bit. That interest parlayed into a visit this past weekend where they could show Martinez around and let him get to know the program a little better. He came to Gainesville Friday and then back again Saturday.

"All the coaches really like me at Florida, and have seen my film and like it a lot," he said.

"The weekend went very well. On Friday I got to watch their walk-through before the game on Saturday. I got to sit in on a few meetings and meet all the coaches. My father and I talked to (offensive line coach Tim Davis) for a while, along with (Tampa recruiting area coach Derek Lewis). That night we got to catch a Florida baseball game which I enjoyed very much.

"Saturday was a blast getting to walk around the weight room and around the field. The biggest thing that stood out to me was how welcoming the coaching staff was along with the players."

The Gators have a little bit of a hurdle to overcome with regards to Martinez, but that almost seems like an afterthought now with the way he puts it.

"I did grow up a Noles fan, and still am one, though that is irrelevant to any decisions I make," he said.

He has a busy spring and summer ahead and knows of at least one more time he will be coming back to Gainesville to visit… for one of Florida's camps.

"I know that coming up now this month I'm going to the Nike Football Training Camp in Orlando, then in June 8-9 I'm going to Florida's mini-camp," he said. "I also may be attending one of the FSU camps. I'm just not sure when."

When he is looking at these schools he kind of knows whet he is looking for, even this early in the decision making process.

"One of the most important things I look for in a college is their academics, that plays a big role," he said. "Some other things I look for, of course is the team and the coaching staff."

Colleges are being attracted to Martinez because of his size, but that size leads directly to the things that make him a difference maker on the field and he also has an uncanny quickness for a guy his size.

"A couple of the strengths that I have on the field are my explosiveness off the ball and my foot work," he said. "I also have good vision on the field which helps me get to the next level."
