Officials dropped a ball into Weigand's stick to see if it was legal. The goal was waved off because the pocket of the stick was ruled to be too deep.
Syracuse ran the remainder of the time off the clock and sent the game to a sudden death overtime period.
It didn't take long for the Orange to strike from there. Just 58 seconds into the period, Sarah Holden scored an unassisted goal to end the game with a 14-13 win for Syracuse.
The late controversy didn't cover up the lead that Florida blew during the second half. The Gators went to halftime with a 7-3 lead and ran out to an 11-4 lead with 21:34 remaining on the clock.
Over the last 19 minutes of regulation, Syracuse went on a 9-3 run to tie it with 30 seconds remaining.
The Gators and Orange split draw controls at 16 each, but Syracuse won the ground balls 19-6. Syracuse also outshot the Gators 43-24. Without Florida goalie Mikey Meagher's season high 15 saves, the game wouldn't have been close.
Florida's season ended with a 19-3 record and the program's first appearance in the Final Four.
