The question on everyone's mind this week has been the status of starting quarterback Connor Shaw.
Shaw injured his shoulder in the Vanderbilt game last week and was able to come back in the second half to help lead the Gamecocks to a 17-13 win over Vanderbilt. The Gamecocks leader has since struggled with lifting his throwing arm this week but was given the chance to practice on Wednesday evening.
Shaw was not allowed to speak to the media after practice but was seen walking off the practice fields with his pads in hand. He gave a thumbs up to the media as he walked by and said he felt "good."
This is certainly a good thing for the Gamecocks and senior offensive lineman T.J. Johnson who thought Shaw looked good during this evening's practice.
"Connor is very optimistic. He seems to be doing well but everything is still day-to-day so we don't know what's gonna happen."
Johnson did offer his feelings on Shaw's performance.
"I felt like he looked like Connor."
If Shaw is unable to go, Johnson feels like the offensive line is ready to go whoever is back there at quarterback.
"We're a team and we're confident with whoever goes back there. We believe in Dylan, we believe in Seth, we believe in Clifford. Whoever goes back there, we're gonna block the same for them and we believe in all of them. As an offensive lineman, you want to protect the quarterback. You want to protect him the best you can no matter what."
Johnson would not offer up his feelings on whether or not Shaw would play this Saturday.
Johnson also mentioned that he thought Cody Gibson did well in the game against Vanderbilt. He said as a unit, they had a lot of mistakes. There is room for improvement and it's been something they've tried to address this week in practice.
Johnson also said they have heard the coaches talk about the improvement from week one to week two.
"That's something the coaches have said all week. We're gonna see where we're at in week two."
When Johnson was asked about what type of coach Shawn Elliott was he responded with:
"His intensity and fire. He's a great motivator. His pre-game speeches are awesome. He's a fun coach to play for and he's a player's coach but he's also down our throats whenever we mess up."
The Gamecocks return to the practice fields on Thursday to finish their preparations for East Carolina. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network with a 12:21 p.m. kickoff time.
