Five-star RB Collins picks Arkansas

The top running back in Florida made a name for himself in Broward County, but Alex Collins surprised some by straying away from hometown Miami as he announced for Arkansas on Monday.

Alex Collins has committed to Arkansas.

The five-star running back pledged to the Razorbacks on Monday night, just two days before letter of intent day.

"The University of Arkansas!" he said after a big gasp during a live announcement on FOX Sports South. "I like the fact that they run the ball."

In every recruiting cycle, there are late risers and surprises. Collins was somebody on the radar after his sophomore year, but his breakout junior season and elevated senior campaign allowed his stock to soar.

Getting through the cycle as the top running back in Florida is no easy task with the likes of Derrick Henry, Kelvin Taylor, Greg Bryant and Ryan Green -- respectively, the No. 4, No. 8, No. 13 and No. 18 running backs of 2013 -- in the same class, but Collins got the nod.

Collins chose the Razorbacks over Miami, where he was previously committed, among others live on FOX Sports South's The NEW College Football Show: Next Class 2013.

"(Arkansas has) been recruiting me for two years, I feel like I can trust them," he added. "I feel like they can get me to the next level academically and athletically."

Collins, who later admitted to FOX Sports NEXT that he didn't know his destination until less than a minute before announcing it on air, is ranked as the No. 3 running back in the class of 2013.'s Jamie Newberg contributed to this report
