Coach Flo's Tigers Fall to Florida

The Auburn women's basketball team's slump continued with a loss at the Auburn Arena.

Auburn, Ala.--The Auburn's women's basketball team saw its losing streak increase to eight games as the Tigers suffered a 65-57 home loss on Sunday to Florida.

The visitors used a 48-35 rebounding advantage to improve their record to 15-9 overall and 4-6 in the SEC. Auburn dropped to 13-11 and 2-9 in league play.

Tyrese Tanner led the Tigers with 17 points while Blanche Alverson and Hasina Muhammad scored 10 points each.

The Tigers played the game without starting guard Jet Ouardad, who suffered an ankle injury in practice. "When you lose your point guard it's like losing your quarterback," Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy said. "It's like losing your pitcher. It's a lot."

Auburn's first-year head coach said the Tigers, who led by as many as nine points, had their opportunities to end the losing streak. "Unfortunately, this is another game that goes in the category of we should have won or we could have won," she said. "Of course, it's a tough night without our starting point guard.

"It's very frustrating," Williams-Flournoy said. "We haven't been rebounding very well the last couple of games and it's been giving up offensive rebounds.

"Offensive rebounding is nothing but a certain type of skill, it's just an extra effort to want to go get it and Florida wanted to go get the ball. We did not do our job of boxing out and making a conscious effort for us when that was one of our main goals going into the game because we knew how well they rebounded."

Tyrese Tanner shoots for the Tigers.

Auburn jumped to an 11-2 lead to open the game, but the Lady Gators tied the game 26-26 at halftime.

The game was tied at 35-35 with 14:15 left in the second half following a three-pointer by Chadarryl Clay, but Florida scored 12 of the next 15 points and never surrrendered its lead.

The Tigers are off until next Sunday when they play Alabama at 1:30 p.m. at the Auburn Arena.
