Good news on injuries for fall camp

The post-spring injury report produced good news for Florida. With two torn ACLs and a shoulder injury clouding the depth chart at linebacker, Florida head coach Will Muschamp expects Ronald Powell to return healthy to his BUCK linebacker position this fall. He'll be joined by freshmen Alex Anzalone and Matt Rolin, who both got will be ready to go early in fall camp.

Ronald Powell tore his ACL in the spring game last year but expected to return near the midway point of the 2012 season. That didn't happen, as Powell suffered an injury to the ACL while trying to rehab it last season. He was held out of spring practices this year to continue taking the rehab slow, but the redshirt junior was recently given a clean bill of health and cleared for all football activities.

He can run and change directions on the knee, doing all of those workouts with the Florida training staff.

Powell was a player named last spring among those that made the biggest leaps on the team. He led the Gators with six sacks as a sophomore during the 2011 season and was still viewed as a player that made a major improvement during the offseason.

The coaches expect him to carry that growth into the 2013 season.

"I can't wait," Florida head coach Will Muschamp said. "I'm looking forward to it. I don't know if I'm more excited or him. The guy's worked hard. He had a tremendous setback there in September.

"When you talk to him about playing, he gets a smile on his face and he starts thinking about it. He told me he thinks about it every day -- walking back on that field with his buddies and being on the field again playing and contributing."?

During Powell's exit interview after spring practice, Muschamp spoke with him about returning from injury. Muschamp came back from a broken leg during his playing career at Georgia and wanted to help Powell prepare for what he'll face once fall camp goes to full contact drills.

"There will be a couple moments early on to feel that contact and that strike and taking on that 300-pounder and understanding that your leg's gonna be okay," Muschamp said. "Any injured player goes through that. There will be a little bit of a mental block -- how much will depend on that day and what happens."

The Gators got more good news with a pair of freshmen linebackers. Alex Anzalone and Matt Rolin both came to campus early to go through spring practice. Anzalone suffered a shoulder injury early in practice while Rolin came to campus with a torn ACL suffered during his senior season of high school.

Rolin is expected to be at full strength when fall camp starts. Anzalone should return to practice within the first week in the fall.

"You're not in full pads until your fifth day. We're talking about he may miss a little contact time," Muschamp said of Anzalone. "I was told on Matt he should be full go. Everybody should be full go hitting fall camp with the exception of Trip Thurman and Alex. They're on the same time frame. I'm thinking maybe a week, maybe 10 days."
