Wake offers Xavier Preston

From Jensen Beach, Fla., outside linebacker Xavier Preston has had an impressive spring practice and seen his offer list rise by two. With eight previous offers heading into spring ball, Preston (6-foot-2, 217-pounds) was given an offer from Georgia Tech in early spring and most recently by Wake Forest.

"Coach Ray McCartney, the defensive line coach offered me in person last Friday," said Preston. "He said he likes my range, size, and play-making ability. They like me at outside linebacker or the SAM position.

"You know, I don't know a lot about Wake Forest, but I've heard many great things about them. I'm definitely going to be looking into the program and what they have to offer."

Preston has accumulated offers from Arkansas State, Illinois, Louisville, Memphis, N.C. State, Rutgers, USF, and UCF in addition to Georgia Tech and Wake Forest. He plans on taking visits this summer before narrowing his list of favorites.

"Once school gets out I'm going to take some visits this summer so I can get a good feel for the schools," Preston said. "I want to be comfortable in the environment because I'll be there the next four or five years of my life. I'd like to study engineering so I'm looking for a college with a top engineering program."

In his second year as a starter at Jensen Beach, Preston made 50 tackles, 14 tackles, for loss, four sacks, and two forced fumbles. He said he's prepared for most any defensive scheme in college.

"We run a 4-3 and a 5-2 defense," Preston said on the Falcons defensive alignment. "This spring my coverage has been way better. I went to a lot of 7-on-7's this spring. I was at two Nike Training Camps in Miami and Orlando. I read in an article that I was one of the top linebackers there. I also went to an Under Armour Combine in Miami where I thought I did pretty well but haven't gotten any feedback on it."

Jensen Beach will have an inter-squad game on Friday, May 17th and a spring game with Port St. Lucie on Friday, May 24th. The falcons finished 5-6 in 2012 with a first round loss to Merritt Island in the Florida Class 5A playoffs.
