Summer baseball update

This summer has produced a strangely low number of Florida baseball players participating in summer leagues. The entire incoming recruiting class has moved in and is joined by multiple returning players still in Gainesville. However, there are a handful of Gators getting experience in different leagues.

The Cape Cod League has ben frequented with Florida players in recent years, but that isn't the case this season.

Ryan Harris pitched for the Bourne Braves and made four relief appearances before returning to Florida to rest his arm for the summer. In those four outing, he threw seven innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out five hitters and walking four.

After a strong freshman season for the Gators, Richie Martin has spent his summer in the Cape Cod League playing for the Falmouth Commodores. It hasn't gone as well as his freshman year. Martin is hitting .130 (9-for-69) with two doubles as his only extra base hits. Martin has struck out 19 times and walked 10 times. He stole seven bases in the first seven games of the summer and currently has nine stolen bases while being caught four times. Martin has also made four errors at shortstop.

Taylor Gushue has started 15 games behind the plate for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. After going through an inconsistent sophomore year, Gushue is hitting .205 (8-for-39) in 15 games this summer with three doubles, one triple and one home run. Gushue has scored five runs, driven in seven and even added one stolen base.

Justin Shafer played just four games for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, going 1-for-8 with two strikeouts before returning to Florida.

Tucker Simpson, who decided to transfer from Florida after his freshman season, has thrown 18.2 innings, allowing 17 hits and five runs. He has struck out 12 hitters and walked seven for the Wareham Gatemen.

Aaron Rhodes is having a strong summer in the Northwoods League. Rhodes has started four games and made two relief appearances, totaling 30.1 innings with 29 hits, 11 runs (nine earned) with 36 strikeouts for the Waterloo Bucks.

In five relief appearances for the Wisconsin Woodchucks, left-hander Parker Danciu has thrown 13.1 innings and allowed 16 hits, two runs, four walks and eight strikeouts. Brady Roberson went 2-for-17 with three walks and five strikeouts for the Woodchucks before returning to Florida.
