Film Evaluation; Christian Gill

Scout.com takes a closer look at Navarre (Fla.) High School defensive lineman Christian Gill. The 6-foot-3 and 240-pound senior has moved from his defensive end position to nose tackle this season. Gill is being looked at as a defensive end or tight end by most and possibly an offensive lineman by some schools.

Being recruited by: East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Middle Tennessee, Old Dominion, South Alabama, South Florida, Southern Miss, Troy

What to Like

Christian Gill is an intriguing prospect that is being recruited most schools as a defensive end/tight end/offensive lineman but is playing mostly nose tackle for Navarre High School this season. He has good size and 6-foot-3 and 240-pounds. He shows decent athleticism and good strength on film. He bends well and comes of the ball low. Gill show flashes of being a solid inside defensive line prospect when he comes of the ball low, with his head up, establishes inside hands and forces a new line of scrimmage. He has played some fullback this season and shows good leg drive and lower body strength when running the ball or clearing the way as a lead blocker.

Room for Improvement

Gill does demonstrate good athleticism but does need to work on keeping his head up coming off the ball and getting his hands inside on the blocker quicker coming off the ball. He also needs to work on getting off blocks better and work on taking on double team blocks. When he doesn't come off the ball with his eyes and head up he often times misses the opportunity to engage his blocker and ends up on the ground. Gill's area of deficiency at nose tackle will likely lessen as he continues to get used to the transition from defensive end to nose tackle. Gill would also benefit from getting his upper body stronger and would be able to shed blocks easier with added strength.

Final Thoughts

Clearly Gill has made the switch to nose tackle to help his team and in the process shown that he is an unselfish player. If Gill was lining up at either defensive end or tight end more often he would get a chance to show off more of his athleticism and thusly be getting more attention from a recruiting stand point. After seeing Gill at Florida State's camp and now on film I believe that Gill is either offensive or defensive linemen in college and not a tight end or defensive end. The senior ran a 5.12 at FSU's camp this summer. At 6-foot-3 and 240-pounds Gill has the frame to add substantial weight to his frame once he gets into a college strength and conditioning program. Gill is certainly a good enough football player and gifted enough athletically to help several football programs out at the FBS mid-major conference or FCS level if not the FBS power conference level.
