Hargreaves named SEC Freshman of the Week

The Florida secondary was expected to anchor the defense, and through four games this season, there's a freshman leading the unit in interceptions. Cornerback Vernon Hargreaves was named SEC Freshman of the Week for his performance against Kentucky, including his third interception in four career games.

Vernon Hargreaves made two tackles on Saturday to go along with his one interception and one pass breakup. On the season, Hargreaves has seven total tackles with three interceptions and four pass breakups.

"Extremely impressed," senior defensive back Jaylen Watkins said. "That was a play on the ball that I haven't seen in a while. He has great ball skills. He just makes our secondary even better than it was before."

With cornerback Marcus Roberson missing time, Hargreaves has taken over his role on defense and as the punt returner. He has only returned two punts for a total of five yards. The Gators clearly trust the freshman in big roles.

Watkins said Hargreaves has simply carried his play over from fall camp when he stole the show from the veterans in the defensive backfield.
