Gators have limited roster available

Florida will play its exhibition game on Friday night against Florida Southern with only six scholarship players. The laundry list of injuries combined with three suspensions left head coach Billy Donovan without an expected starting lineup on Thursday. The Gators aren't sure how many players they'll have for the season opener on November 8.

Florida will be without three suspended players -- forward Dorian Finney-Smith, center Damontre Harris and guard Scottie Wilbekin -- for Friday's exhibition game. All three were suspended indefinitely, and Billy Donovan said their suspensions will go into the regular season. Wilbekin's suspension is expected to be longer than the suspensions of Finney-Smith and Harris.

"Indefinite right now for me," Donovan said about the suspensions. "They're practicing. There's some things that they need to do as well. Hopefully, they will do it and we'll see how that translates going forward."

The injury list is growing, too. Guard Michael Fraizer will miss Friday as he continues to rest with mononucleosis. Donovan expects the illness to hold him out of regular season games.

Will Yeguete's status is still up in the air for Friday. He told Donovan earlier this week that he didn't think it would be best to play, but the two planned to talk again on Friday and make a decision. He practiced well on Tuesday and didn't practice at all on Wednesday. Team trainers cleared him to practice on Thursday, but the decision about Friday night would be left up to Yeguete.

"If he does play tomorrow, it's going to be on his terms," Donovan said. "I'm not forcing him or telling him he can't. We're going to go into this situation where he's going to have to evaluate where he's at."

Rutgers transfer Eli Carter is going to play on Friday after rehabbing his broken leg suffered last season. The leg is fully healed, but he's still fighting through soreness while hoping the get the explosion and strength back in it.

"He's laboring," Donovan said. "He runs with a little bit of a limp and he has to work through that. We're going to at least throw him in there and see how much he can respond. But he will be available to play."

The Gators have six scholarship players -- Carter, Dillon Graham, Kasey Hill, Casey Prather, DeVon Walker and Patric Young -- available for Friday night. Even among those players, Graham (sprained ankle) and Prather (hamstring) have dealt with recent injuries. Walk-ons Billy Donovan and Jacob Kurtz will play roles against Florida Southern.

"When you looked on paper at the guys that were supposed to be on our team, we looked like a very optimistic, promising team," Donovan said. "Right now we're not a very good team. We've had some injuries. We're not the same team.

"We've had a lot of little health issues that we've had," Donovan said. "From day to day it's really been very, very different for our guys. We've had just a different group, using walk-ons, just doing different things to make the most out of practice when we can."
