Murphy transferring to Florida

Florida's pursuit of big men for next season's roster has brought a familiar name to Gainesville. Alex Murphy, the younger brother for former Florida forward Erik Murphy, announced on Wednesday that he would transfer to Florida.

"It's official, I'm a Florida Gator!" Alex Murphy said on Twitter. "I'm more than excited and can't wait to get down to Gainesville soon!!!"

The 6-8, 220-pound forward will be eligible halfway through the 2014-15 season and will be a welcomed addition to a team trying to find size. Starting big men Will Yeguete and Patric Young will graduate after this season.

Dorian Finney-Smith and Chris Walker are expected to return but could leave school after this season. Freshman Devin Robinson (6-8) will be another big body on the roster, but he's expected to be more of a wing. That makes Murphy's ability to rebound even more important to the Florida roster.

Murphy played just five games this season at Duke before deciding to transfer. His most significant playing time came last season when he averaged 2.1 points and 1.0 rebounds in 31 games played. The best game of his career came against Miami on January 23, 2013, when Murphy scored 11 points and pulled down five rebounds.

Murphy also considered Rhode Island, Providence and Northeastern before making his decision to transfer to Florida.
