Weathersby Focused On Academics

Toby Weathersby discusses his visit to Austin and what he's looking for in a school.

Houston Westfield lineman Toby Weathersby already had an offer when he trekked into Austin for Junior Day, so he wanted to check out some of the non-football stuff on the schedule.

"I liked it overall," Weathersby said. "They took me to the petroleum engineering building, what I'd like to major in one day. They showed me different things like the drill bits, how they're coated with diamonds. I thought 'whoa, that's amazing.' You learn something new every day. That's eye-opening."

Petroleum engineering?

"First, that's where the money's at, man," Weathersby said. "You get to be outside, outdoors with the agriculture, out on the land."

It certainly pays for offensive linemen to be smart, and Weathersby said he's been debating between majoring in petroleum and electrical engineering for all "my high school days."

On the football field, he's pretty good too, ranking as potentially the top in-state offensive tackle in the 2015 class and drawing offers from Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Florida, Michigan State, Maryland and Wake Forest. The Texas offer came recently, and Weathersby said he enjoyed talking shop with offensive line coach Joe Wickline.

"We went over position-wise and plays, and how he runs things and it's pretty much the same how we run it at Westfield," Weathersby said. "It's just different code words and names. Other than that, it was pretty much the same."

Weathersby said Wickline showed him a number of plays that fit into both zone blocking and power blocking concepts. Overall, the concepts, and the team, were something he said he felt comfortable with.

"It's a rebuilding process, and I wouldn't mind being a part of a rebuilding process," Weathersby said.

Weathersby wouldn't say whether he had any favorites or not, but was quick to mention what he's looking for in a potential school. "Academics-wise," Weathersby said. "I look at where they stand and how can they help me become a better person in life. That's what I look at."
