Charlie Strong understands to have a great defense you need great line play from the guys up front. It all starts with the defensive line and defensive tackle Daron Payne is one of the best the country has to offer in 2015. The 6-foot-3, 330-pound interior monster checks in from Irondale (AL) Shades Valley high school.
The five star tackle is not that familiar with the Longhorns but Texas does have one thing going for them, defensive line coach Chris Rumph who Payne is very familiar with.
"I like Texas," Daron Payne said. "I like them because of the relationship I have with coach [Chris] Rumph. I like the discipline the new coach (Charlie Strong) is instilling into the team."
It might be a stretch for Payne to leave the state of Alabama but if he does Texas will have as good a chance as anyone based on the relationship coach Rumph has built.
Payne is the man in the middle you look to build your defense around. He can really anchor the defensive line and cause teams to double-team him. He is very strong at the point of attack and he can move well side-to-side. He is more of a bull rush guy right now and can help collapse the pocket up the middle. He needs to refine his game as a pass rusher and his overall technique. A strong and big body in the middle. - Chad Simmons
