Zimmerman Coming to Late Night

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. --- North Carolina took the initiative with Stephen Zimmerman and, as a result, the Tar Heels are his first confirmed official visit.

The Zimmerman family confirmed on Thursday evening that the UNC official visit will occur the weekend of Oct. 3 - which includes the "Late Night with Roy" event.

"It was actually the first one we scheduled because they asked first," Zimmerman's mother, Lori, said.

She noted that the whole family will be accompanying Stephen on the Chapel Hill trip.

A 7-footer ranked in the Top 10 of the 2015 class, Zimmerman has said in the past that he'd use his official visits on schools that weren't on the West Coast. He noted Thursday that he is tentatively planning to also officially visit Louisville, Kansas and Kentucky. And he could use a fifth official visit as well. The other schools on his list of finalists are Arizona, Indiana, UCLA and UNLV.

Since Roy Williams offered a scholarship to Zimmerman nine months ago, the communication with UNC has been constant.

"I still talk to him a lot,” Zimmerman said.

More specifically, there is weekly contact between multiple members of the Tar Heel coaching staff.

His mother explained, "C.B. (McGrath) texts me 3-4 times a week and I think Roy, C.B. and Hubert (Davis) call and text Stephen."

In joining the Oakland Soldiers team for the 2014 AAU season, Zimmerman has teamed up fellow Top 10 post player Ivan Rabb. The two have said they're not a package deal for a college and don't speak extensively on the subject of playing college ball together, but there is substantial overlap in the schools recruiting both of them.

UNC has also discussed with Rabb the possibility of visiting for Late Night.

"I love playing with Ivan," Zimmerman said. "He’s a great player. He can pass as well. Usually you can’t find two big men that can pass. You usually have to stick one at the top and one of the bottom, but me and Ivan can interchange and that can help a lot.”

Zimmerman added that he's fully open to the idea of playing college ball away from his home region - that homesickness won't be a factor. He's just eager to begin his college career, wherever it is.

"I’m just trying to go wherever is going to help me out the most,” he said. "I don’t even want to go my senior year (of high school). I want to leave for college already.”
