Gardner hoping for offer after FNL

Atlantic Coast receiver David Gardner was in Gainesville once again this weekend participating in Florida’s biggest prospect camp of the year, Friday Night Lights. It was Gardner’s third trip to campus so far this summer, and he was pleased with his performance against some of the region’s top competition.

“It went really well tonight,” said David Gardner. “I enjoyed the experience working with the coaches and against such great competition. There were a lot of great players out there, but I think I did well against everybody.”

Gardner pegs his relationship with newly named receivers coach Chris Leak as one of Florida’s biggest drawing points.

“Coach Leak is a family first guy, he’s always texting me making sure I’m doing okay and my family’s doing okay. He cares about me not just as a football player but as a person also, and that’s what I love about him.”

While Leak is his primary recruiter, Gardner says he has also has spoken extensively with first-year offensive coordinator Kurt Roper about his potential role in Florida’s new spread offense.

“Coach Roper says they’ll be running a lot of three and four wide receiver sets, throwing the ball downfield a lot. He thinks I’ll be able to come in and fit into the system well.”

The 6’2, 175 lb. rising senior currently holds offers from schools such as Maryland, Cincinnati, UAB, and Eastern Michigan. Gardner says he doesn’t have a clear cut favorite at the moment, but things could change if he gets a scholarship offer from the Gators. And after a strong performance against top competition at Friday Night Lights, Gardner believes he could be receiving an offer from Florida in the near future.

“I don’t know exactly where I stand with an offer, but I’m sure I’m pretty close to it at this point.”

Gardner hopes to make a commitment before his senior season begins this fall.
