Clark activated, Smith joins Vandals

IN SUNDAY'S PAUL PETRINO PRESS CONFERENCE held Sunday at the University of Idaho on the eve of fall camp, lots of roster updates were provided. Among them freshman CB DORIAN CLARK has been activated and will report to the team for fall camp (originally planned to gray shirt), CB JOSEPH SMITH transferred to Idaho from Utah, DT Alfonso Hampton is expected to join the team in a week, and much more.

All of the players from last year's roster are expected to suit up for fall camp, except for the following:

Desmond Banks (DB) - Banks injured his shoulder and won't be participating in fall camp. He has a redshirt year available, and may redshirt this coming season.

Will Schmidt (LB) - Schmidt is also battling an injury. He redshirted last season and hopefully will be back to participate this fall.

Chris Edwards (DB), Jermaine Johnson (WR), and Elijhaa Penny (RB) were three new JCs that were in Moscow this summer, and per coach Petrino, all three look like they could play on any football team in the country -- lots to look forward to with this group this fall.

As of today, JC recruits Kenny Torrence (WR) and Dennis Rufus (CB) look like they may not make it to Moscow. Both were expected to battle for key roles this fall. Regardless, athletes in the program and joining this fall will be looked at to fill the void as Idaho builds its depth chart for the Florida season opener.

As the discussion transitioned to the rest of the junior college transfers expected to join the team this fall, coach Petrino also introduced a few new athletes who will be battling for playing time throughout the upcoming 2014 season.

Joseph Smith (NEW) - A transfer out of the University of Utah, Smith has one year of eligibility remaining. A backup cornerback with the Utes, Smith is the transfer we've been hearing about for months on our message boards. An athlete with 4.44 speed, he played in two games last season and recorded four solo tackles and 2 assists on the year. Smith joined the Vandal program over the summer (enrolled in graduate school at the University of Idaho), and will be competing for immediate playing time at cornerback and in the nickel package.

Dorian Clark - One of Idaho's top signees in the 2014 recruiting class, Clark was expected to gray shirt this season and enroll in January. Instead, that plan has been put aside as the Vandals have decided to activate Clark immediately. He will be joining the team for fall camp and will be battling for playing time in the cornerback rotation and on several special teams units.

Alfonso Hampton - The most heralded recruit of the 2014 recruiting class. Hampton (6-foot-5, 320), a raw talent ranked the No.9 JC recruit in the nation by ESPN, is in Moscow and is finishing up a class, and is expected to join the team in about a week for fall camp.

Jerett Olson - A junior college offensive lineman, Olson is finishing up a class and is expected to join the team later in fall camp.

Jordan Burke (NEW) - A junior college transfer out of Mesa College, Burke is the son of former Vandal Paul Burke, a tightend when Petrino was an assistant at UI. He will compete in the kicking game (kickoff, field goals, PAT) for the Vandals. Per coach Petrino, if the season started today, Austin Rehkow would do all the kicking, but Burke is working hard and will be competing for kicking duties as the season progresses.

Roberto Asencio (NEW) - One more update, it looks like current Idaho basketball player Asencio, a 6-foot-9 giant of an athlete who is battling to play center on the Vandal basketball team, will join the football team for fall camp and work with the defensive line. Earlier this spring he got a look at wide receiver for a few weeks, and appears to be making the move to DL for fall camp. We will continue to monitor his progress as camp progresses.
