(1-10 @UF 19) Kelvin Taylor rush over left guard for (2) yards on a power run as OL got no push. (2-8 @UF 21) Jeff Driskel. sideline pass complete to Powell,B. for (7) yards on a screen pass and Powell makes his defender miss, while Pittman blocked well on the edge to keep a second defender off. (3-1 @UF 28) Driskel,J. rush up middle for (4) yards on a zone lead run he follows KT into the hole and good movement up front for needing just one yard. (1-10 @UF 32) Driskel,J. sideline pass incomplete to Dunbar,Q..as he drops the ball with great protection up front. (2-10 @UF 32) Driskel,J. rush over right guard for (6) yards on a quarterback draw, finds a hole quick and gets yards. (3-4 @UF 38) Driskel,J. screen pass incomplete to Pittman,L..as Kelvin Taylor tries to block his man through Driskel and hits him as he is throwing the ball would have been really close to a first down if not there. DRIVE KILLER: Really two here. A drop from Dunbar on first down that would have been a first down and then Kelvin Taylor running into Driskel trying to block someone on 3rd and 4.
(1-10 @UF 30) Driskel,J. fumbles the ball forced by Kwon Alexander, on a zone lead play where right guard Trenton Brown missed his block and also Latroy Pittman missed his block as he came across the formation before the snap. Brown’s guy forced the fumble, Pittman’s guy picked it up.
(1-10 @UF 25) Debose,A. rush over left end for (35) yards on the jet sweep and Tevin Westbrook did a marvelous job of cut blocking two defenders and taking them off of the edge to allow Debose to cut up field with all of his speed. (1-10 @LSU 40 Brown,M. rush over left tackle for no gain on an inside zone rush where the LSU linebacker filled the gap nicely. (2-10 @LSU 40 Driskel,J. screen pass complete to Brown,M. for (7) yards that had a great block on the bubble from C.J. Worton and then I loved how Mack slowed his acceleration near the sideline to stay in, lowered his head and dove for an extra three yards. Great effort by Worton and Brown. (3-3 @LSU 33) Driskel,J. rush over left guard for (2) yards a really nice push on the left side with a zone lead run, but Trenton brown whiffed on his man who ended up making the tackle at Driskel’s feet. The massive Brown has issues with smaller defenders. (4-1 @LSU 31) Driskel,J. rush up middle for (7) yards on a QB Power run, Driskel shot through the hole on a play that was really close to going a long way. (1-10 LSU 24) Driskel,J. sideline pass complete to Robinson,D. for (6) yards on a throw Driskel had to get rid of quick because of a corner blitz. (2-4 @LSU 18) Driskel,J. rush over right end for (9) yards on another QB Power run, but a high step doesn’t allow him to run to the hole and a defender to the backfield, so he cuts outside and makes the play on his own. (1-G @LSU 09) Driskel,J. rush over right tackle for (9) yards, TOUCHDOWN as the QB Power run comes to the right side and a nice hole with a lead blocker in Westbrook who blocked his guy all the way to the end zone and Trip Thurman really pulled and hit the original kick-out block as well. Nice designed play. Drive Superlative: The odds of you putting the ball in the end zone are greatly increased on a drive with a 30+ yard play. So the jet sweep from Debose was the big one for me, with huge tough runs from Driskel also all the way down the field.
(1-10 @UF 29) Driskel,J. screen pass complete to Powell,B. for (5) yards to the short field. Pittman was pushed back on his block and Powell got pushed top the sideline and had to make something out of nothing. (2-5 @UF 34) Driskel,J. sideline pass complete to Powell,B. for (21) yards as Driskel lays it in their beautifully and Powell hauls in a catch I don’t think I have seen anyone else on this team make. (1-10 @LSU 45) Jones,M. rush over right guard for (9) yards on a power run with Thurman doing another excellent job pulling and Max Garcia and Chaz Green realy sealing their guys as well. (2-1 @LSU 36) Driskel,J. rush over left tackle for (3) yards on a QB Power lead play and this time Tyler Moore does well from the righ guard spot and pulling. (1-10 @LSU 33)Driskel,J. sideline pass incomplete to Ahmad Fulwood. PENALTY LSU pass interference as ball was underthrown, but Fulwood wasn’t getting any separation running down field. (1-10 @LSU 18) Driskel,J. rush up middle for (2) yards on a QB draw and a hole that closed up quick. Driskel looked a little indecisive there. (2-8 @LSU 16) Jones,M. rush up middle for (1) yard on another really nice play by the middle linebacker who came out of nowhere to shoot the gap and make the tackle. (3-7 @LSU 15) Driskel,J. screen pass complete to Pittman,L. for loss of (-2) yards on a tunnel screen that the safety sniffed out while watching Pittman’s route. Looked like the play should hve been checked with too many defenders on that side. TD KILLER: They netted a field goal and had a decent drive, but the QB draw on the last first down put them in a bad down and distance situation and killed the drive.
(1-10 @UF 15) Driskel,J. sideline pass incomplete to Robinson,D., it was an underthrown ball from Driskel, but Robinson had maybe a half step on the receiver. Not a good throw. (2-10 @UF 15) Driskel,J. rush over right end for (10) yards on a boot leg pass play that Driskel tucks and runs. (1-10 @UF 25) Driskel,J. rush for (5) yards on a fake screen and Driskel sees the middle of the defense move left to cover three wides and finds daylight just on the edge of the left side of his line.(2-5 @UF 30) Taylor,Kel. rush up middle for loss of (-2) yards as a pulling Trenton Brown missed his block on the defensive end who makes the tackle on Taylor in the backfield. (3-7 @UF 28) Driskel,J. deep pass intercepted by T. White and this time Robinson had a couple of steps on the defender and really underthrown. Would have liked to see a little more fight from Robinson on that, but somewhat of a learned trait at this level. DRIVE KILLER: Of course the interception was bad and Spurrier used to always take a long INT on 3rd and long, but the real killer came from Brown’s missed block on 2nd and 5 that put the Gators in that 3rd and 7 situation.
(1-10 @UF 10 Jones,M. rush over right tackle for loss of (-1) yard both Clay Burton and Roderick Johnson lost their battles allowing two defenders to effect the play deep on the right side of the offensive formation. (2-11 @UF 09 Driskel,J. rush up middle for no gain as they are just trying to run out the clock at this point.(3-11 @UF 09 Jones,M. rush up middle for 2 yards again just running out the clock. DRIVE KILLER: Normally I would just write this one off, but on that first down play, if Johnson and Burton make their block on the play Jones has a ton of daylight on the edge and may have been able to get some serious yardage on first down.
(1-10 @UF 24) Driskel,J. rush over right end for loss of (-4) yards as it was a terrifica call and if Mackj brown can make the block on Kwon Alexander and if Driskel reads the block correctly it can go for big gain. Instead Alexander sheds Brown and gets the TFL. (2-14 @UF 20) Driskel,J. rush over right guard for (8) yards on good execution of the QB lead draw and Brown makes a good block a couple of yards down field. (3-6 @UF 28) Driskel,J. deep pass incomplete to Robinson,D… with beautiful protection up front, Robinson was held and not allowed to get to the ball that was thrown inside DRIVE KILLER: First down play and Brown not being able to block his man. Played the assignment but couldn’t handle it.8th Series
(1-10 @UF 25) Driskel,J. scramble up middle for (1) yard after another issue with Trenton Brown sliding and blocking an edge rusher. Brown moved right in front of Driskel on the play. (2-9 @UF 26) Driskel,J. screen pass incomplete to Taylor,Kel. With too much velocity on the screen and Taylor not really running an arch on the play like he should be. (3-9 @UF 26) Driskel,J. sideline pass complete to Westbrook,T. for (8) yards thrown a little low because defender coming over the top so just short of the first down line. (4-1 @UF 34) Driskel,J. rush over left tackle for (2) yards on a Power play and Trenton Brown still not getting there on his pull. But Driskel fights for the first down. (1-10 @UF 36) Driskel,J. middle pass incomplete to Powell,B. on a rushed throw from a corner blitz in a tight alignment. Had two guys wide open crossing each other in the middle of the field, but LSU forced the issue. (2-10 @UF 36) Powell,B. rush over right end for only (1) yard as Thurman misses his block right on the edge forcing Powell deeper than he wants to run on the play. (3-9 @UF 37) Driskel,J. post pass incomplete to Pittman,L..as Pittman was tripped on a deep ball on the right hash. Should have been a pass interference call. DRIVE KILLER: Two things. The first down play where Driskel was rushed from a blitz and basically threw it away. Then the refs missed a tripping for a pass interference.
(1-10 @UF 16) Driskel,J. sideline pass complete to Robinson,D. for (9) yards on a rollout pass that Driskel had to make a play just to throw it, finds his safety valve in Robinson and Robinson makes a tough catch and gets extra yardage. (2-1 @UF 25) Powell,B. rush over left guard for (4) yards in a simple inside zone and Powell finds a small crease and gets a few extra yards out of it. Decent push there. (1-10 @UF 29) Driskel,J. rush over left tackle for (5) yards on a designed QB draw. (2-5 @UF 34) Driskel,J. rush over left end for (1) yard as the LSU safety really made a great play flying in and taking away the outside for Driskel that was there at first. (3-4 @UF 35) Driskel,J. crossing pass complete to Powell,B. for 20 on a nice little screen type pass that Driskel hit him on when the corner came off of that edge and didn’t cover him. (1-10 @LSU 45) Driskel,J. screen pass incomplete to Worton,C..on a pass that was a little low, but catchable and he drops it. Looked like one of the better set up screens of the day. (2-10 @LSU 45) Driskel,J. sideline pass complete to Robinson,D. for (5) yards on a little hitch route that Driskel hummed in there. (3-5 @LSU 40) Driskel,J. rush over left tackle for (1) yard as Powell misses block on linebacker Alexander who really comes in and makes the play on Driskel. DRIVE KILLER:The dropped pass on first down that looked like it had some legs to be a big play.
(1-G @LSU 09) Driskel,J. rush up middle for loss of (-2) yards as Driskel was a little slow getting the play going and he lost his path behind two pulling linemen on a QB Power play. (2-G @LSU 1) Driskel,J. middle pass complete to Robinson,D. for (11) yards TOUCHDOWN with a great pocket, a great throw to the outside and a great hands grab by Robinson for the score.
(1-10 @UF 25) Driskel,J. deep pass complete to Robinson,D. for (73) yards 37 yard pass, 36 yard run after the catch and Driskel was about to get smashed as Thurman missed his block up front, but made his best throw of his career on the play and Robinson did everything but put it in the end zone. (1-G @LSU 02 Powell,B. rush over left guard for (1) yard and LSU with nine in the box, simply not enough UF guys to block their guys. (2-G @LSU 01) Driskel,J. rush up middle for no gain on lead zone QB run. If Driskel takes it over the oeft side he walks in as Mack sealed his guy superbly on the edge, (3-G @LSU 01 Driskel,J. middle pass incomplete to Westbrook,T.. dropped as it hits him in the hands right in front of his chest. TD KILLER: again made the field goal but couldn’t put it in after 1st and goal at the 2. You have to make that catch there.
(1-10 @UF 42) Driskel,J. screen pass complete to Powell,B. for (5) yards and good blociking by Pittman on the edge. (2-5 @UF 47) Driskel,J. screen pass complete to Powell,B. for (8) yards with decent blocking on the left side, this time Pittman didn’t go block anyone. (1-10 @LSU 45) Driskel,J. middle pass intercepted by R. Jefferson and the better throw was to Robinson on a 12 yard Dig. DRIVE KILLER: bad throw from Driskel and inevitable drop from Pittman, strange they would go there with a tie game.
Drive Killers:* Really two here. A drop from Dunbar on first down that would have been a first down and then Kelvin Taylor running into Driskel trying to block someone on 3rd and 4.
* Driskel fumble
* Driskel indecisive on QB Draw
* Pull block by Trenton Brown where he missed his man and Kelvin Taylor was then tackled in the backfield.
* Rod Johnson and Clay Burton both missing key blocks on first down that could have allowed a big play and done something heading into halftime.
* Mack Brown being pummeled as a lead blocker and allowing the linebacker to fight through him to get to Driskel.
* Throw away pass on first down and then a missed pas interference call by the officials.
* Drooped screen pass from Worton that was set up beautifully to make a play.
* Westbrook dropped TD pass.
* Final interception both on Driskel and Pittman.
**Driskel was 83% of the offense, 71 yards rushing and 183 yards passing for 254 yards out of the grossed 306 on the day. That percentage would have gone way up without the drops. And the negative is that the percentage would have gone way up if he made some throws down the field that were there. And of course the three turnovers which ended up being the real difference in the winning and losing.
**Brandon Powell is a new weapon. It is too bad he wasn’t healthy the previous two games. This guy needs to start in the slot with a healthy Matt Jones at running back. Suddenly with Robinson outside, you have three real threats on the field.
**Andre Debose. Just one play with the ball in his hands on offense. That needs to be at least eight a game. He is simply the most dynamic player the Gators have and that is with two relatively new guys in Robinson and Powell.
**Demarcus Robinson. I was all over him for a terrible game against Tennessee. I had him for the forst four drive killers in that game with three drops and a bad route that blew up the 3rd down play. But his Kentucky and LSU games were superb. He made several plays in the game and he needs to keep doing that.
**I liked the play of Trip Thurman in this game. It is hard for me to find linemen that stand out in a lot of plays but he was a very good pulling blocker on the day and oddly enough his worst play to me was the 73-yard strike where he missed his block and his guy pressured Driskel a bit.
**Pass protection was really good again. If we could just pass and catch the ball.
**Shockingly enough there was not one offensive penalty for Florida in the game. I cannot remember the last time that happened. But props has to go to the offensive line and Coach Mike Summers for the lack of silly penalties the offense has gotten over the years. They have really slowed down.
**The three turnovers from Driskel.
**The offensive line struggled against smaller quicker players up front. Especially Trenton Brown who had three bad plays as a pulling guard. Looked like the worst game I have seen from Brown.
**Pittman, Dunbar, and Westbrook with the drops. It is a huge issue for this offense with 24 drops now in five games. (Do need to say that Westbrook was huge on the long Debose run and a big 3rd down pass during the game.
**Running backs struggled. We know Matt Jones was injured. Completely understandable. Taylor, Brown, and even Powell didn’t run well with all of the Power run plays that were called. And some of this goes back to the offensive line having issues with smaller and quicker defensive linemen.
Final offensive thoughts
When a guy like Driskel handles the ball so much and is so much of the offense like he was on Saturday, the mistakes are going to happen. The way he recovers from that is by making the explosive play. He made several big plays and hard runs on the day that were crucial in the contest. He made the one, but if he connects on a couple of other explosive plays, this game goes a totally different direction.
Same subject really and they have to help the QB’s out moving forward. Guys like Robinson and Powell and Debose need to get the majority of the touches in the passing game. They really like Worton and he looks to be more incorporated for the same reason. Maybe Fulwood as well. As I mentioned, I like Matt Jones at running back but the others haven’t shown much at all this year.
Looking forward to seeing Treon. I know for a fact he isn’t ready with the entire offense so Driskel will start, but we will see a lot of him moving forward. They need some sparks as the two paragraphs above say, he could certainly help there.
