Cain ready to make mark on college football

The senior quarterback for Tampa Bay Technical High School caught a lot of eyes, but settled on Clemson for his college of choice and gave a verbal commitment in May. Deon Cain went to visit two weeks ago and remembers why he knew from the start Clemson would be a great fit.

“When I went there, I loved the campus. I loved the type of coach and family and family atmosphere they have there,” Deon Cain recalls. “I feel really comfortable there and I know that I’ll be able to play on the field early and I see myself in that type of offense.”

Cain is a four star recruit and wowed a long list of schools including Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky Louisville, LSU, Marshall, Michigan State, Mississippi State, NC State, Nebraska,, North Carolina, Ohio State, South Florida, Syracuse, Tennessee, UCF and Wisconsin, but Clemson was his choice. His commitment is much in part to Jake Fruhmorgen and Ray Ray McCloud who are also committed to Clemson.

“That’s made me more comfortable to be locked in at that school because I know these people. They come from the same area that I am from so that’s why I’m comfortable and one hundred percent.”

Even though he is sure about Clemson there are still many schools he talks to who would have him in a heartbeat.

Cain says, “Mostly I still talk to Florida. They’ve got some big games. I do still talk to Alabama, Auburn and Florida State too.”

There are so many eyes on Cain now, but he knows even more will be on him in college and he is ready for the excitement and thrill that will bring.

“It’s a another step, a big step that I know I can be successful in. Just being in the college environment in that atmosphere, especially Clemson, they have a big fan base so I think I’ll be able to handle something like that in big situations.”

The big situations are what Cain is ready for. As a quarterback, now he knows how to read plays and make game time decisions. He also knows his speed is something that will put him above the rest, and seeing many freshman make big plays this year gives him the confidence he can and will do the same.

“I think it’s really exciting and interesting freshman starting because it gives me more hope that I can do things like that too,” Cain says. “There’s guys from here that are breaking records so it gives me hope I can break records with my speed and abilities.”

While Cain is excited for college and the future he knows the season he is in now isn’t over and continues to prepare himself for the next level.

“I really want to work on my speed and ball catching,” he explains. “I’m trying to get more length so I do Plyo and Pilates to try and get my body more lengthy, so I can make those crazy catches.”
