Five’s for Eastern Kentucky

Here are five things to know about the Eastern Kentucky Colonels and five things we want to see from the Gators on Saturday. (photo: EKU head coach Dean Hood)

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE COLONELS

The best player… Running back Dy’Shawn Mobley has rushed for 1,372 yards and 19 touchdowns so far this season averaging an even 6.0 yards per carry. The 5-foot-11 215 pounder is a load, but also pretty fast. He is coming off of his best game of his career against Murray State where he rushed for 224 yards and five touchdowns and caught another touchdown pass as well.

Highly thought of… The Colonels are 9-2 on the season and are ranked 14th in the country in the FCS division of football. Their only losses on the season came to Tennessee Tech (39-31) and to 4th ranked FCS opponent Jacksonville State (20-6).

Team Sudden Change… “Sudden Change is a term used in football used to denote turnovers or blocked kicks. Teams will yell this on the sideline to alert players or units that might be beusy studying something else to get out on the field. Well, the Colonels are responsible for hauling in 15 interceptions, 15 fumble recoveries, seven blocked kicks and three blocked punts. What we consider 40 turnovers is remarkable during an 11 game schedule.

Also team turnover… The Colonels also turn the ball over a great deal giving u 17 interceptions and 10 fumbles on the year. To think that having 30 turnovers in your favor and your margin is only three is pretty unique to say the least.

Block party… With Florida having given up a blocked kick and a blocked punt that were game killers last week they need to be on the lookout for sophomore receiver Devin Borders. Borders has already blocked two punts and three field goals this year. It is no accident either, the speedster blocked five different kicks in 2013 as well.

FIVE THINGS WE WANT TO SEE FROM FLORIDA

Have fun… It has been a long time since we have had regular fun watching Gator football. Granted the season opener, the Georgia game, and the Vanderbilt game were three more fun games than they had a year ago. There has been a lot of tension around here and a great deal of that has been lifted with the dismissal of Will Muschamp as head coach. There is a worry that the team could come out flat, but I imagine they will be itching and ready to get to a bowl game that they didn’t get to play in a year ago. So, come out Saturday and have fun and look good doing it.

Throw it around… I know this has been a weekly request for four years now, but Eastern Kentucky is 105th in pass defense in a lower division of football. It is time to just air this thing out and have some of the fun that we talked about just above.

Stuff the run and get after the passer… They are eratic throwing the ball throwing for 14 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. So stop the running game which is their bread and butter and then get after the passer. They have given up 20 sacks on the year and they won’t see anything like they will see on Saturday. Expect a quicker passing game out of them than they are used to doing because of that. Dante Fowler needs to eat Saturday at lunch time.

Find the middle… If there is any chance of beating FSU a week from now, the offense is going to have to find the middle of the field in the passing game. There is little doubt they have been protecting freshman quarterback Treon Harris as he grows into the offense, but this is a game they should be able to take the training wheels off and see what he can do in live game action. Let’s see it.

Zig-zag Dunbar… I just want to see senior receiver Quinton Dunbar take the ball on a short to mid level catch and zig-zag his way to a touchdown Saturday. I have maligned him for not being able to get a yard after catch, but he has made some really tough catches in hiss day. I want the senior from Miami to just do it once.

One extra… I wish all of the seniors that are dressed on Saturday to get in the game and do something to remember. All of the hours and hard work they have poured in to being a Gator haven’t turned out to be a lot of fun, but that could change on Saturday of they get a chance to do something. That will take getting a big lead first, but what a way to end a dream of playing college football when you didn’t have much chance for four years on the job.
