The reports started early Sunday when Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated who is as respected as they get in the business in THIS STORY asserting that Freeze was on the short list in Gainesville.
“The next week will be one of the most fascinating in the history of Ole Miss athletics,” Thamel wrote. “Coach Hugh Freeze is on Jeremy Foley’s short list to replace Will Muschamp at Florida, according to multiple sources. It’s unknown if Freeze is the favorite, but he’ll clearly be in the conversation.”
Sunday evening, Steven Godfrey of SB Nation went a step further in THIS STORY saying that Florida and Freeze were in negotiations and he was weighing his options between Ole Miss and Florida.
“Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze is considering an offer to coach at the University of Florida for a base salary in the range of $4.2 to $4.3 million annually, according to multiple sources,” Godfrey wrote.
Shortly before Godfrey’s report came out, Pat Forde of Yahoo.com wrote about Colorado State's McElwain THIS STORY about McElwain who reportedly talked to the Florida brass Saturday evening after the Gators lost to Florida State and the last game that Will Muschamp would coach.
“Colorado State coach Jim McElwain has emerged as a leading candidate for the Florida vacancy, multiple sources told Yahoo Sports Sunday,” Forde wrote. “McElwain and Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley discussed the Gators job Saturday night, sources said.”
Foley stated two weeks ago during the press conference in which Florida detailed the dismissal of Muschamp that he would wait until the regular season was over to contact any of the candidates on board. The timing here coincides with both of these candidates.
It certainly makes sense that Foley would look hard at these two. They have been successful at places where it isn’t easy to be successful. They are offensive minded, and they both have ties to the SEC.
