Possible Gator assistants under McElwain

With Jim McElwain named head coach at the University of Florida, the new speculation will begin on hiring assistant coaches. The Gators currently have nine assistants on staff and several should be looked at to continue on in the same or at least some capacity. Also, McElwain has worked many places and been in the business a while, so he has worked with quite a few good ones to think about.

Here is a list of assistant coaches to pay attention to after the Jim McElwain hire. Some he has worked with and others are currently employed at Florida.

Offensive Coordinators (OC)/ Quarterback Coaches

Kurt Roper is the current Florida OC and QB coach. Florida currently has their 4th best scoring offense and 5th best yardage offense in the last 10 years after struggling a great deal more since he arrived. Roper had a very strong offense as the coordinator at Duke before arriving.

Doug Nussmeier is the current OC and QB coach at Michigan and is now on the market for a job. Has four years of professional experience and 11 years collegiate experience and was on the staff at Michigan State with McElwain.

Dave Baldwin is the current CSU OC/QB coach. Also coaches with McElwain at Michigan State and was OC with McElwain being the WR coach. Pretty prolific offenses under his tenure, especially the three he had at Utah State before moving to CSU. His last two seasons at Utah State with a 5200 yard and a 5500 yard season.

Receiver Coaches

Chris Leak is the current Florida receiver coach and is concluding his first season ever as a college coach.

Mike Groh coached with McElwain at Bama in 2011, is currently the WR coach with the Chicago Bears. Has three years of professional coaching experience to go along with 11 years at the collegiate level.

Curt Cignetti is the current head coach of Division III IUP. They have struggled in his two years on the job. Cignetti coached receivers with McElwain at Alabama for three seasons.

Alvis Whitted is a nine year NFL veteran wide receiver and current receivers coach at CSU finishing up his third season. He is in his fifth year of coaching and his receivers had a great year in 2014, improving greatly over the last two years. In 10 games, sophomore receiver Rashard Higgins caught 77 passes for 1,447 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Billy Napier is the current receiver coach at Alabama. He served as the quarterback coach for McElwain in his first year at Colorado State.

Offensive Line Coaches

Mike Summers is the current Florida offensive line coach who has done maybe the best job of any assistant on staff this season with the offensive line. He has also done the best job on the offensive line in five years at Florida.

Jeff Stoutland coached with McElwain in 2011 at Bama and at Michigan State. Stoutland is the current OL coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and is a highly thought of offensive line coach.

Derek Frazier is the current CSU OL coach, played and coached with McElwain at Fresno State four years earlier.

Pat Hill is the current offensive line coach of the Atlanta Falcons. He was the head coach at Fresno State from 1997-2011 and for the year that McElwain was there as the OC and quarterback coach in 2007.

Tight End Coaches

Derek Lewis is the current Florida tight end coach and an excellent recruiter. Lewis also coached Jordan Reed from being a quarterback to a third round NFL pick at tight end and a promising NFL player. He has been at Florida for four years and was hired by Will Muschamp at the position.

Art Valero is the current tight end coach at CSU. Valero was a 10 year coach in the NFL including stops at Tampa Bay, St. Louis, Seattle, and Tennessee.

Running Backs Coaches

Brian White is the current Florida offensive line coach. Known as a solid recruiter that has netted Florida some very good prospects all the way from California. His backs at Florida have been solid but and has the only 1,000 yard rusher under his watch in the last 10 years with Mike Gillislee in 2012.

Jeff Hammerschmidt is the current Running back coach and special teams coordinator for Colorado State.

Reggie Mitchell is the current RB coach and recruiting coordinator at Kansas and so he is unemployed at the moment. Mitchell had two running backs earn All-Big-12 honors in 2012. He is a 31 year veteran of the coaching profession.

Ben Sirmans is the third year RB coach of the St. Louis Rams. Coached 16 years of college ball before the rams gig. He was with McElwain on the 2005 staff at Michigan State.

Defensive Line Coaches

Brad Lawing is the current defensive line coach at Florida and finishing up his second year on the job. He has done a fine job of coaching up a young unit that showed great progress this season. He is also an excellent recruiter of whom we have seen in his short time on campus.

Steve Stripling is the current defensive line coach of the Tennessee Vols. Stripling coached with McElwain at both Michigan State and Louisville.

Bo Davis is in his fifth year at Alabama as the defensive line coach and worked there during the time that McElwain was on staff with the Crimson Tide.

Sal Sunseri is the current defensive end coach at Florida State and coached with McElwain during his stint at Alabama.

Chris Rumph is the current defensive line coach at Texas and a 13 year college coaching veteran. They worked together at Alabama as well.

Linebacker Coaches

D.J. Durkin is the current defensive coordinator at Florida and has been the coordinator for three top ten defenses at Florida in his four years. Durkin has remained loyal to the school having come to Florida from Stanford in 2009, when Urban Meyer lured him here to coach. His players love him and some like Antonio Morrison progressed a great deal under his watch at linebacker.

Coleman Hutzler is finishing his first year at Florida as an outside linebacker coach and special teams coordinator.

Mike Cox is the current Kansas State linebacker coach. Cox coached with McElwain at Michigan State. He’s coached for 26 years and has two years NFL experience as well.

Chuck Dreisbach is the current LB coach of the Cleveland Browns. Dreisbach coached with McElwain in 2005 at Michigan State where he coached CB’s. He has over 20 years in the college ranks as a defensive coordinator.

Kevin Steele is the linebacker coach at Alabama. He coached with McElwaine at Alabama in 2008.

Lance Thompson is in his third year in a row of his third stint at Alabama. He was at Alabama in a previous stint with McElwain.

James Willis is the current defensive coordinator at Louisiana-Lafayette. He coached with McElwaine during his stint at Alabama. He has 13 years of coaching experience almost all of which is at the college level.

Defensive Back Coaches

Travaris Robinson is in his fourth year at Florida as the defensive backs coach and is annually lauded for his coaching and recruiting ability. Robinson came to Florida with Muschamp and coaches a tenacious type of play from his guys.

Paul Haynes is the current head coach at Kent State. They are struggling at 2-9 this season after going 4-8 in his first year. He was the Arkansas DC in 2012, Ohio State Co-DC in 2011, and OSU DB coach from 2005-2010. He has a very solid all around resume and with his struggles at Kent State he might entertain something new. Haynes coached with McElwain at Michigan State.

Jeremy Pruitt is the current defensive coordinator at Georgia. He had a very successful stint at Florida State before moving to Georgia. He coached defensive backs at Alabama during the time that McElwain was with Alabama.
