Gators Collins with good impression on Thomas

One of the huge needs in the 2015 recruiting class for the Florida Gators is at linebacker and the Florida Gators didn’t waste any time getting to see one of their primary targets at the position. Adonis Thomas was previously committed to Florida, but has switched his commitment to Alabama during the process. He met with Florida’s defensive coordinator Thursday and the meeting seemed to go well.

Lawrenceville (Ga.) Central Gwinnett head coach Todd Wofford was on hand for Florida defensive coordinator Geoff Collins visit with Adonis Thomas. Wofford has known Collins for a while and he thought the interaction between his star pupil and his old friend was very positive.

“I thought it went good,” Wofford said about the visit. “There was a little bit of recruiting going on and a lot of trying to get to know each other situation.

“I have known Coach Collins for a long time. We actually played for the same high school coach. I have always known he was a good guy, but this was more of him and Adonis talking about some scheme stuff and how they would use him. Other than that it was more so getting to know him and who he was, who he has coached, where he has coached.”

Thomas was previously committed to Florida but has switched his allegiance to the Crimson Tide of Alabama when things started getting rocky for the Gators this past season. Florida is trying hard to get Thomas to visit and see what the new staff has to offer.

“They want to get him and bring him down there,” Wofford said. “They talked about the outlook on how they are going to handle things and go about their business. It was a good back and forth, which a lot of times (Adonis) doesn’t do.”

Thomas was really interested in what Collins told him he would play in the Gators’ new defense.

“Collins said Adonis would possibly start at SAM or inside or just move him around,” Wofford said. “That really intrigued Adonis a lot. It was similar to what Coach Muschamp was looking at him as. With his athletic ability he can do a lot of different things.”

Next up is his official to Alabama this weekend where the Crimson Tide will be without a linebacker coach after losing both to other programs this week. Then, Florida’s head coach Jim McElwain will be in to see Thomas next week and try and secure an official visit.

“Coach McElwain is coming by next week and I am sure they will talk about possibly getting him in for a visit,” Wofford said.

We will continue to keep up with Thomas throughout this month and the rest of his recruitment.
