Four-star receiver Ryan Davis, who was breaking area and state records this year as a dual threat quarterback has become quite the wanted man. With that in mind and the feverish pitch of recruiting this year his schedule changes quite frequently.
All set to visit Alabama this weekend, Davis had a change of heart Thursday night and is now headed a little more locally. Gainesville is just two hours away and Davis says that he will make an official visit with the Gators instead of the Crimson Tide. He also was being a little elusive about what might be in store the following week, when he originally scheduled the visit with the Gators.
“I am visiting Florida this weekend,” Davis said Thursday night. “I just wanted to do it this weekend. I have something in my mind for next weekend so I changed my Florida visit to this one.”
The visit may have been prompted somewhat by the visit of Florida coaches to his school and home on Wednesday. Offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier and recruiting area coach Kirk Callahan paid the elusive receiver a visit that he said went very well.
“It was great a very good time,” Davis said. “We talked about a bunch of stuff. I got a feel for Coach Nuss, I had a feel for Coach Callahan… so it was a good little visit.”
Davis has been to Florida numerous times, but this will be the first time with the current staff. One obstacle in his recruitment right now is the fact that head coach Jim McElwain hasn’t hired a receiver coach yet. Davis says that they have given him reassurances that he will like the new coach when he is hired.
“I want to see more on the visit, there isn’t too much more they can tell me,” Davis said. “They say they know the guy. They tried to give me a hint but couldn’t really tell me, I think I know who it is, but I don’t want to say.”
As a quarterback this past year Davis broke a ton of local records both with his arm and his feet. He showed why so many teams are on him so heavily right now. That hasn’t been lost on the Florida staff who sees him doing a bit of everything.
“Coach Nussmeier says that my role would be all over the place,” Davis said. “Some slot, outside, jet sweeps, all of that stuff.”
Davis’ brother and father visited with him at Auburn last week and will do the same this week. They are going to look keenly at what Florida has mapped out for Davis and his abilities.
“I want to see what the plan is and more in how they will use me,” he said.
Davis is planning on a signing day decision and knows what it will be about when he makes a decision on a program.
“It will be about the scheme and with the coaches that I feel most comfortable and who has the best plan for me,” Davis said.
