Gators recruiting board trends (Part 2)

Florida’s need for talent at receiver has been going on for years now. This 2015 recruiting class is an important one at the position with some nice possibilities. At linebacker they signed none a year ago, the importance of getting some talent there can’t be understated. The numbers are also low in the secondary on the Florida roster. Here is a look at these prospects and how we see things going.

RECEIVER

The position needs an influx of speed and elusiveness. Guys like Ryan Davis, Van Jefferson, K.J. Hill, Antonio Callaway, and Shaquery Wilson bring both attributes in a big way.

Recruiting Stock Meter:

Davis is in town this weekend after cancelling a trip to Alabama. He was certain to make a Florida trip and has some unconfirmed trip or something due up next week. The feeling is good about this electric dynamo and maybe the only thing that is holding a decision back is not having a position coach. The meter is up this week because ihe is in town for the trip after being a little wishy on it early in the week.

Recruiting Stock Meter:

There are some connections on the staff at Florida and he and his father want him to play in a pro-spread style offense that head coach Jim McElwain and company will incorporate in Gainesville. He’s a big time player that the staff wants and the fact that he finally dropped his commitment to Georgia allows for the arrow to be up. Oklahoma is also a major player here and Jefferson had a great trip to Norman last week. He is due in to Gainesville for his official next weekend.

Recruiting Stock Meter:

This one kind of came out of the blue and after de-committing from Arkansas Hill looked to be headed to Alabama. That isn’t happening, so now Florida is in the mix. He already visited in the fall, so he can’t come on another official, but he is allowing the new staff to communicate. Arkansas is still in the mix and Oklahoma is as well. Arrow up because he wasn’t even on the radar a week ago.

Recruiting Stock Meter:

It is an on again off again thing with Callaway. Right now, at least to a certain extent it is on and he plans on visiting the Gators next weekend. He is on an official visit to West Virginia this weekend and Miami is looking big. He’s a big time player but he has been so unsure of visiting the Gators this week, the feeling isn’t a good one.

Recruiting Stock Meter:

Wilson received an offer on Thursday and the Georgia commit is a guy the Gators want to get on board of they can. Helping lock down another in-state kid from going out-of-state would be a big plus and he will visit next weekend for the gators to try and make that happen.

LINEBACKER

The Gators signed zero linebackers a year ago so getting 2-3 in the 2015 class is so important. They need to really hit on some of these because the board isn’t as big as you might want it, but getting some of Rayshad Jackson, Adonis Thomas, Richard McBryde, Jordan Griffin, Jeff Holland, and Josh Smith would help fill the void.

Recruiting Stock Meter:

Visiting this weekend and another Miami prospect that the staff got on to when Randy Shannon joined the group. Jackson is athletic and a great looking prospect to find this late in the process, a true sleeper that should have been recruited all along. This one looks real good for the good guys and something could happen during the visit this weekend. Stay tuned.

Recruiting Stock Meter:

He visited Alabama, the school he is committed to, a week ago and loved the visit. He seemed to reaffirm his commitment. Then he had an in-home visit with McElwain and now there is a real chance that Thomas could visit Florida before all is said and done. With only one more week left it would have to be next week, the arrow goes up because the vibes are pretty good to make a real run at this one time Gator commitment.

Recruiting Stock Meter:

He doesn’t talk much so it is hard to get a read. McBryde is on his official visit to Auburn, the school he is committed to. However, there is a little bit of uneasiness with his commitment because Will Muschamp didn’t recruit him at all at Florida. This one isn’t looking great for Florida so we aren’t willing to go out on a limb at this point.

Recruiting Stock Meter:

No offer just yet for Griffin, but you just have to believe that is going to happen at this point. From powerhouse Armwood Griffin is a tackle machine. The meter set at even because this won’t really change until an offer gets extended.

Recruiting Stock Meter:

This one is a little rough around the edges. Seemingly a lock at one time to wind up at Florida, when Muschamp wound up at Auburn it changed things. Auburn was always the other school anyway, now it seems this one is lost.

Recruiting Stock Meter:

This one was hot for a while after Geoff Collins showed up on staff as the defensive coordinator, but there hasn’t been any news lately on him and Florida. He’s committed to Vanderbilt but getting plenty of attention. Wait and see here, but it doesn’t look promising.

DEFENSIVE BACKS

The secondary has talent, but is short on depth and getting a couple of defensive backs in the 2015 class would help solve the depth issues. It wouldn’t be surprising to hear from more but Jeremiah Dinson, Chris Williamson, and Rashad Fenton headline the board right now.

Recruiting Stock Meter:

Visited Florida last week and had a very good visit. He is visiting Auburn this week and should make his mind up shortly after. We like his frame of mind before going into this Auburn visit so we think things are looking up for this South Florida prospect.

Recruiting Stock Meter:

Williamson wants to play early, it is a really big deal for him. Florida offered a couple of weeks ago and 20 something offers followed shortly after. Collins has a connection to his coach, but Florida is going to have to convince him that they need him to get on the field early. After the initial high of the offer, this one is slightly less convincing at this point.

Recruiting Stock Meter:

Fenton visited last week and we haven’t heard anything from him since. He’s certainly a prospect to keep in mind, but until we hear more, we aren’t expecting much.

With another week left, we still expect more prospects to show up on the recruiting board at the above positions. We expect things to change a great deal for most of the above as well. We will take a look next at the lines of scrimmage prospects in the class of 2015.
