Ancrum gets offer and will visit Gators

Finding high school defensive linemen that can turn into productive college defensive linemen is always a tough task. That task has been especially tough in the 2015 class and the gators need to find them. While the big names are still on the recruiting board and being recruited, a new name and maybe a diamond in the rough has appeared.

Sebring (Fla.) High School defensive lineman Luke Ancrum was at school on Monday when he got a visit from Florida defensive line coach Terrell Williams. College coaches have been in and out and Ancrum does have offers from FIU, UConn, and UMass, but the home state power house Gators and their defensive line coach gave Ancrum a nice surprise.

“At first there wasn’t an offer on the table, then coach Terrell talked to the head coach, then I talked to the head coach and he told me,” Ancrum said by phone Monday night.

The offer from Williams was a big surprise and Ancrum talked about what the former NFL assistant liked about the young man.

“Coach Williams said he liked that I have a lot of potential and a bright future ahead of me,” Ancrum said. “He says I have to work hard and let me know it is a big school and big time football. He said I’m an underrated player. He knows I deserve this, I work hard for it and that I still have more work to do.”

Already at 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds and playing a lot of basketball, the Gators see Ancrum growing quite a bit and believe he could become a defensive tackle before all is said and done. With offers from a lot of programs in the fall, they fell off as other guys committed to those spots. The surprise today is a big one and he understands what he will have to do if he actually does commit to Florida.

“I know everybody is competing for a spot to get on the field,” he said about expected competition.

Ancrum plays center for the basketball team and averages over 12 rebounds a game as eats up the middle of the lane. He uses his basketball tools to do the things he can do on the football field.

“I am aggressive and some people say that I have a high motor,” Ancrum said.

Ancrum has never been to The Swamp and he knows what he is looking for when he visits the Gainesville campus this weekend.

“I want to see the environment, the school, and the football facilities,” he said. “I just want to see everything for myself.”
