Relationships are such a big thing in recruiting and with an almost entirely new coaching staff at Florida, they have been busy trying to build relationships from nothing with all of the top prospects on the recruiting board.
One prospect they are spending a lot of time with is Lawrenceville (Ga.) Central Gwinnett 4-star linebacker Adonis Thomas. The prized head hunter was a huge target for the last staff and remains the same for the new one.
On Tuesday, Florida defensive coordinator Geoff Collins visited Thomas in his home town for the third time this month and continues to make an impression according to Central Gwinnett head coach Todd Wofford.
“It went good,” Wofford said if the latest visit. “You can actually tell they get more comfortable with each other every time they talk. They aren’t just getting to know each other anymore, you can sense there is more of a familiarity with each other and how they talk.”One mission that Collins has had on each trip is to try and convince Thomas to make an official visit to Florida. This is the last weekend for that to happen before signing day and it remains to be seen if he has actually been convinced.
“Coach Collins wants him to try and take the visit down for the last weekend and all of that stuff,” Wofford said. “Adonis is thinking about. It. We will see what he does.”
It appears that Thomas and Wofford were also especially impressed with linebacker coach and c-coordinator Randy Shannon. This isn’t an abnormal tale from the prospects and coaches that have spoken with him in person.
“Coach Shannon came in last week,” Wofford said. “Adonis really likes him a lot. I know without a shadow of a doubt if those guys had been there just a few weeks longer it would be a really, really, really tough situation. It is just a thing where they are getting to know him from scratch. Knowing how he is getting a feel for Coach Shannon it would make it that much more difficult to ever say no to Florida. That is how good he is.
“It is the first time I met him and I was blown away myself. He is just a real guy. You can tell the recruiting part, with his experience and the guys he has coached you can be blown away with that. But you can tell his personality and the way he talks to players and kids that he is someone you would like to play for.
“He isn’t a car salesman, he doesn’t promise this and that. He is just a real dude.”
In a recruiting season that is curt short one week by the new College Football Playoffs, the staff is making big impressions on the trail. With Thomas, it seems to be that close to making a difference. The Gators are hoping they aren’t one week short of making that happen.
We will continue to follow Adonis Thomas recruitment on Scout until the fax lands somewhere, so stay tuned.
