Schwarz named SEC Freshman of the Week

Florida’s catcher position has been handled well by two freshmen this year, and the conference honored one on Monday.

Freshman J.J. Schwarz was named SEC Freshman of the Week after hitting .462 (6-13) in Florida’s four games last season. In the weekend series sweep of Stony Brook, Schwarz hit .444 (4-9) with two doubles, one run and an RBI. He had two hits on Sunday, pushing his hitting streak to six games for No. 2 Florida.

Schwarz’s double on Friday night drove in Harrison Bader during the sixth inning, scoring the only run of the night to give the Gators (10-1) a 1-0 lead behind a shutout from Logan Shore and Bobby Poyner.

Florida also recorded a midweek win over top 25-ranked Florida Atlantic, and Schwarz went 2-4 while driving in three runs.

For the year, Schwarz is second on the team with a .342 average, 13 RBI and three home runs, trailing only Bader in all three categories. He’s also second on the team with seven extra-base hits this year.

Behind the plate, Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan has split time with Mike Rivera and Schwarz. It was All-SEC selection Taylor Gushue that anchored the Gators as the catchers last year and was eventually a fourth round pick, but the two freshmen have handled the pitchers well and also provided offense.

The Gators face No. 9 UCF on Tuesday in Orlando before hosting the Golden Knights on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Florida will face Maine in a three-game series this weekend at McKethan Stadium.
