Davonte Lawrence enjoys Gainesville trip

Jacksonville (Fla.) Raines is a popular school for division one coaches to recruit these days and with at least four division one prospects on the roster, Florida wants to get them up to see the campus and visit with the staff when they can. They got their wish in the form of Davonte Lawrence and two others on Saturday.

Florida hosted its first Junior Day under head coach Jim McElwain and the early returns were great with two commitments including Cocoa defensive back Chauncey Gardner and a teammate of Davonte Lawrence in defensive end JaQuan Bailey.

Lawrence got a taste of Florida and liked what the atmosphere.

“I really enjoyed it,” Lawrence said of the trip. “I liked the campus. The coaches are really nice and really care about your education.”

Lawrence rode up with Bailey and said his teammate knew he was going to be offered and was just ready to do what he needed to do.

“He was excited and had everything planned out already to commit,” Lawrence said with a laugh.

As for the young safety at Raines, the Gators are still evaluating and told him they will continue looking.

“They are just showing interest at this point,” he said. Florida is one of many programs that are looking for the self-described “all-around player”.

“There are a lot of schools interested,” he said. “Duke, North Carolina, UCF, and USF, no offers yet but they are coming.”
