Hampton felt comfortable in Gainesville

Cornerback Mike Hampton of Tampa Hillsborough showed up for Jim McElwain’s first Junior day on Saturday and left with a real easy feeling about the program and the staff that McElwain is building in Gainesville.

For Michael Hampton, he just wanted to get a feel for what it was like at Florida when he visited and he liked what was going on.

“It went good, I really liked it,” Hampton said about the visit. “The atmosphere, I just felt like I knew the coaches forever, they were very thorough about everything.

At 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds Hampton is primo size for the cornerback position and he says that is a big part of what Florida likes about him. He feels the Gators are close to extending an offer.

“They told me they like my size and liked my highlight film,” he said. “I felt like they wanted to offer me but didn’t say it. I will be back, sometime in the spring. I really got comfortable around the staff.

He hit it off with Florida defensive back coach Kirk Callahan as well.

“I talked to Coach Callahan a lot,” Hampton said. “He is cool. Even though he went to Armwood and they are a rival, he is cool.”

The offers are close to rolling in and he has one big one at the moment.

“Right now I have an offer from Pittsburgh,” he said. “I think Miami is real close to offering and I am supposed to go down there next week. USF and Indiana are also close to offering.

Hampton says he would like to make a decision about the school he chooses by the middle of his senior year and knows a few things he will base that decision on.

“I want to get along with the coaches and the players,” he said. “The atmosphere and academics are also important. I will look at the fan base and stuff like that.”
