Gators to open season at Navy

Florida will open its season as part of the Veterans Classic on November 13.

It’s the first time the Gators will open their season with a true road game in 15 years. The last time Florida opened the road came with a win at Florida State to open the 2000-01 season.

The Gators will face Navy on November 13 at 9:30 p.m. It will be the second game in a double header with North Carolina and Temple facing off at 7 p.m. Both games will be shown on CBS Sports Network. According to Florida, teams participating in the Veterans Classic will get a chance to see what life is like for midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy and experience traditions and activities of daily life there.

“This event is a unique opportunity for our team not just on the court, but it’s a chance for our guys to interact with people their age who are leading a really special way of life in service to our country,” Florida coach Billy Donovan said. “The qualities that the Naval Academy represents – duty, honor and loyalty – are characteristics that we can all aspire to living out. I know this will be an outstanding experience to tip off our season.”

It will be the third meeting between Florida and Navy. The teams split neutral site games during the 1960-61 and 1961-62 seasons. The only game Florida has played against a service academy under Donovan came in a 78-61 win over Air Force at the Orange Bowl Classic on December 29, 2012.
