Four-star athlete Darius Whitfield visited Florida back in the spring and liked it a lot. That visit hasn’t seemed to wear off yet for the big man as you can see him using Twitter to talk about Florida quite a bit. When we asked him Tuesday night what he thought, Whitfield didn’t hold back.
“I love them Gators,” he said.
Whitfield is a prime target for Florida who likes the primo sized strong side defensive ends. With that in mind, defensive coordinator Geoff Collins and defensive line coach Chris Rumph are on him pretty good. The relationship he is building means the Gators are going to be in this one for a while. Rumph likes to have fun with the prospects and gave Whitfield a nickname because he’s the only one he is recruiting from Mobile.
“I talk to Coach Collins and Coach Rumph,” Whitfield said. “(Rumph) is a great coach, funny as ever. He calls me ‘Mob Town’. (Coach Collins) is a cool guy to be around. I believe he’s going to give you every chance to show what you can do.
Whitfield is high on the swag at Florida. The history of the Gators inning so much while he’s been around is something that lures him to pay more attention.
“I like how they put D-Linemen out, the Chucky Doll, and The Swamp,” he said. “Yeah, I’m going to visit again.”
While some are recruiting him as an offensive guard, most teams, like Florida, are recruiting him to play along the defensive line. And while it seems Florida is going to stay in the mix for a while, he isn’t quite ready to narrow things down a bit. But, he knows what he is looking for in a program.
“I will have a top seven this summer,” he said. “Education is always first for me and then playing time.”
