At Miami Belen Jesuit Prep, Jorge Powell was 12 of 15 on field goal attempts as a senior in 2014. He was named to the 1st team All-Dade County and an All-State kicker as well. He owns a school record 54 yard field goal made for Belen. He made 28 of 29 extra point attempts as a senior.
As mentioned above, Powell hasn’t played a down yet for Florida, but he may get that chance in 2015. While junior kicker Austin Hardin had a strong spring putting the ball between the goal posts on field goals, he has struggled a great deal with consistency in his career as a Gator.
Head coach Jim McElwain also was not happy with kickoffs during the Orange and Blue Debut in April, Powell was able to jump in and compete and kick a few. He will have to work on that as well, but it could be his shot.
Only a redshirt freshman, if he makes a real impression on the staff, he could earn a scholarship that the staff is likely looking to fill in the 2016 recruiting class, of which they will be looking at campers in the next month.
Jersey #98 is Jorge Powell and he is our Gator player of the day as we continue to count them down.
