Steele tabs Hargreaves as All-American

With the long summer beginning before Florida opens the Jim McElwain era, the Gators have one defensive player who should bring in many preseason awards.

The first one came for Vernon Hargreaves III on Monday.

Phil Steele put the junior cornerback on his First Team Defensive All-American Team. Steele put Hargreaves on his third team following the 2014 season. Last season, Hargreaves was a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award and a First Team All-American for Sporting News, ESPN and CBS Sports. He was a unanimous First Team All-SEC selection.

Hargreaves finished the 2014 season with 50 tackles, leading the team and the SEC with 13 pass breakups. He added three interceptions, one that sealed the Birmingham Bowl win, but opposing teams frequently shied away from throwing to his side of the field.

Steele placed Florida linebacker Antonio Morrison on the Third Team Defensive All-American Team. The senior’s status is still uncertain as he continues to recover from a knee injury suffered in the Birmingham Bowl.
