100 wishes for Gator football: Day #95

Tuesday marks 95 days until the Florida Gators kickoff and we continue with our good wishes for Jim McElwain’s first go as the Florida head coach. Today our wish comes in the form of the persona of Gator football. It will be hard to do in year one with some serious questions on offense, but this Gator program needs to get its SWAG back.

Remember back in the 1990’s and in the mid-2000’s when nobody wanted to play the Gators. In the nineties, Steve Spurrier would embarrass your defense every chance he had. It didn’t matter if it was Florida State or Coppin State, if he could put 52 on you, he was going to do that.

Remember during the Urban Meyer era when The Florida defense was so good that they turned a 60 points per game Bob Stoops’ offense at Oklahoma into a 14 point national runner up. Or when Meyer’s offense could run over you or pass through your defense on any night.

Well, we have had a few players here and there that show the swagger that has become representative of University of Florida football. Dominique Easley, Sharrif Floyd, Matt Elam, Dante Fowler, Vernon Hargreaves, are a few. The defense has carried much of the SWAG banner for the last several years. But, this team needs to find it on both sides.

You know it really doesn’t have to be a “pass it all over the place” offense that we watch to get the masses going and to show they are back. Give us an identity of a team that will rail road the opponents’ butts into the next season by pounding it on them and Gator fans can be just as happy, especially if they find a few more of the SWAG players on defense to now go with Hargreaves.

That feeling like the Georgia game last year, maybe the only time the fans have felt that way in the last five years… not a single pass was caught, but they could live with that happening several times in a season.

Whatever it takes, we need some characters on both sides of the ball to revive the mantra and the SWAG of Florida football. As stated before, it won’t be easy this year given the issues up front on offense, but that SWAG can certainly show up more than it has in the last five years.

Bring it on!!!
