There are a couple of spots on roster that we have some questions about right now. There are some capable players for both spots, but they are so important and they are positions that need to be nailed down. Could the same guy nail both spots down?
It was a real issue this past year. It seems the only time Florida could get anything accomplished in the slot was when they moved star receiver Demarcus Robinson to the position. As a matter of fact most of Robinson’s touchdowns came when he was inserted in the slot.
Robinson can certainly play the position but he needs to be utilized on the outside. Adding a real playmaker at the slot can only help with everyone else on the field.
The number one player at the position right now is former running back Brandon Powell. Powell caught the ball well last year and ended up getting a couple of shots in the slot; now he is a full time receiver and he should get first go. However, he missed the entire spring as they worked on a foot issue.
Kick / Punt Returner
There aren’t many from last year’s roster going to be missed at a particular position than kick and punt returner Andre Debose. As much as he never lived up to the hype as a receiver at Florida, he more than did so as a return man and has SEC and Florida records for returns to his name.
He’s gone now and the Gators have to find someone or a few that can try and fill the two spots. Powell is certainly a candidate on both. Robinson will likely start out as the main punt returner. Vernon Hargreaves will likely get the honors to field punts that may land close to the goal line.
Can true freshman Jordan Scarlett make a move here? Is Callaway another possibility? Valdes Showers has shown big time glimpses.
We have seen some possibilities here, but the Gators really need to finds the right guys.
