“I went up to the head coach’s office,” Pineiro said via phone on Tuesday. “He was there sitting with my dad. He was reading and seeing videos of me kick. He heard how I did very well at Alabama and Nick Saban was really impressed. He stood up and told my dad that he wanted to offer me a full scholarship.”
A huge relief and excitement overcame Pineiro.
“I was excited, I really liked it,” he said. “It was my first offer and I was really excited. I worked really hard in the last couple of months for that very moment.”
A little background on Pineiro’s story explains why he has flown under the radar a bit. He’s now in junior college but has always had the leg.
“I kicked football for four games in my senior year,” he said of his time at Sunset High School in Miami. “I stopped because I got a scholarship to play soccer. I was just doing it to help my football team. The school I am going to now, ASA College (in Miami), they needed a kicker. I went and worked out and kicked a 65 yard field goal in front of the coach and he said ‘Oh man , we really need you’. So, I decided to help them out.
“I started enjoying it and going to a couple of camps. I have won every camp I have gone to. I started hitting 70 yard field goals and getting attention from that.”
Now there is a little time to wait and see what else transpires. He doesn’t seem to be in a huge rush to make a decision, even with a solitary offer in hand.
“I’m just going to sit down with my parents and figure out what I want to do,” he said. “There is still a while. I have a little bit of time.
“I am supposed to hear back from Alabama tomorrow (Wednesday). They are supposed to call me and see if they will offer or not. It’s looking good. I think they are, but I can’t say if they are or not, they haven’t really told me. Miami has seen my video and they are excited. They want me to stay home and I should get a call from them today and see what the deal is and what is going to happen.”
