Breakdown of Gator targets at The Opening

The Opening is the largest aggregation of top talent at the high school level during the year. Around 150 of the top prospects, mostly from the 2016 class but including several in the 2017 class will meet in Eugene, Oregon to compete against each other. Florida has quite a few that will be tested and recruited starting July 5th for six days.

The prospects are broken up into six teams and Florida has prospects tey are recruiting on all of the six teams represented. Here is a breakdown of our thoughts on these prospects both athletically and with regards to the Gators recruitment of them.

Team Alpha Pro

Nate Craig

A high priority at receiver, Craig is a powerfully built guy that can make all the catches. He has been recovering from injury and may not be back to his best form of last year, but he is still as good as it gets and a primo receiver the Gators are lacking on the roster.

The Gators seem to trail Auburn and Florida State at this time, but will likely be mentioned for Craig throughout the process and will have a shot throughout.

Kristian Fulton

The highest rated cornerback on the board for Florida in terms of his Scout rating. Fulton is a great athlete and a guy that Florida has been working hard to get on campus. He told me this week that he will visit Florida on July 13, so that is a big step in the right direction.

Florida is likely not the front runner, but I also think Fulton may be a little more open to the prospect of being a Gator than a lot believe. The fact that both parents are visiting on the 13th is a huge sign in my opinion.

Team Fly Rush

Ben Davis

Davis is the lone prospect on Team Fly Rush, and we talked to him last week after he visited the Gators briefly. He’s a big time player who is also an Alabama legacy and most have him pegged to end up with the Crimson Tide.

The Gators have been able to show him their big time need for linebackers and he told us that he will be back to visit in August or September. Get him back on campus and things could get interesting.

Team Hypercool

Chauncey Gardner

Gardner has turned from a Florida commit that was going to take several visits elsewhere to one of the biggest recruiters in the class. He may still take some visits, but no one can question his loyalty with his actions and his open media voice about being a Gator.

Gardner is an exceptional athlete and I think a guy that could really improve his already high stock while he is out in Oregon. This could be a very big week for the young man.

Jeffrey McCulloch

With linebacker being such a huge need, the Gators are looking for the best and going everywhere to look for them. Houston is a place they are really attacking and one of the premiere players in America happens to be McCulloch and at the need position.

Nicknamed “The Shark”, McCulloch has his pick of schools and he is one to watch next week as things unfold.

Tyler Vaughns

We talked to Vaughns last week and he just missed a trip to Florida the week before. He had some school issue that came up and couldn’t leave home. Nevertheless, he says he will be visiting Florida and says the Gators are one of his four teams he is digging the most right now.

We should expect Vaughns to be star in Oregon, it is his kind of even to do so. An extremely smooth receiver, he just makes things look so easy.

Dexter Lawrence

Lawrence continues to mention Florida and his position may be the hardest to find quality players. He is a talented beast of a player and one the Gators would love to land in the long run.

Team Lunarbeast

Dillon Sterling-Cole

One of the most intriguing guys to pay attention to. His stock has climbed and he will go hard in the quarterback competition during the week. Sterling-Cole visited Gainesville in June and liked everything the staff had to say and show the young man.

This is a guy that could see his stock climb even further with all the competition on hand. The gators are definitely in the hunt with this Houston prospect.

Tyrie Cleveland

He visited with Sterling-Cole last month and is from the state if Florida. The two should remain big targets for Florida for a while. Being from Jacksonville originally, he gets back to The Sunshine Sate a lot already

He’s another that should thrive in a setting like The Opening. He’s tall and rangy and super-fast. Look for him to have a big week.

Interviewed last week and he said he has definite interest in the Gators. Hardman is a guy that could play on either side of the ball, but I believe the Gators are recruiting him on defense.

The five-star is one of the more prominent players with a growing demand for his talent. The Gators have a lot of work to do for this big timer, but should be working him.

Eric Cuffee

He has a very recent offer from Florida and honestly we don’t’ know much about this Texas prospect in terms of his recruitment.

His talent can’t be denied and his size is exactly what Florida is looking for in a cornerback as well.

Trayvon Mullen

A primo prospect that is one of the best in the country at his position. The Gators will continue recruiting Mullen although they are playing catch up with LSU and Florida State on this one.

Team Mach Speed

Binjimen Victor

Victor is probably the main target at receiver for the Gators. Just days away from committing publicly last month, he backed out of it and has no timetable at this point.

As mentioned on a few others, this is the kind of event this tall, speedy, and athletic receiver can thrive. He doesn’t have too much farther to go, but still has a chance to improve his stock during the week.

Brett Heggie

He’s the Gators top target at center and one of the best nationally. If I had to bet, I believe Heggie will make some noise next week in Oregon with his play.

He visited Florida a couple of weeks ago and the trip seemed to surprise him a bit… in a good way. With the moves the Gators have made on the offensive line, there aren’t likely to take too many more linemen, but Heggie is one they really want.

Janarius Robinson

Big time player currently committed to the Noles. He is a beast that happens to be realy athletic as well. He will shine in Oregon on the field.

As far as his recruitment. He seems wide open to seeing everything. He understands the Noles are looking at other as well and that isn’t sitting great with him after previous conversations with the staff. He told me last week he will get back to Florida before the summer is out, and that would be his second visit to Gainesville.

Team Superbad

The other main Gator target at quarterback, this one is committed to LSU. He has a chance to show up as the best quarterback at the event with his tools.

We haven’t caught up with anyone associated with Franks for a while, but still believe the Gators remain a constant thought in the young man’s head . I would expect if a change was made it would come before the football season.

Sam Bruce

He’s the opposite of all of these other receivers. But, Bruce is a guy that uses his smaller size to his advantage and often times just goes untouched when on the field. He is a highlight machine waiting to happen.

We talked to Bruce last week and he certainly has interest in Florida. The Miami commitment hasn’t backed away from that yet, but this is one to watch as we move along in this recruiting process.

Dontavious Jackson

Another Houston prospect and linebacker, Jackson is a big time player. Linebacker isn’t usually the position to do big things in this environment, but he has a chance to stand out among his peers with his athletic ability.

He hasn’t talked a lot about the Gators, but Florida is going to stay on him.
