One of the best is offensive tackle Marcus Tatum, who also happens to be the top offensive tackle prospect in the state of Florida. For several weeks now Tatum has listed a top group of schools that include Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Miami, and Tennessee. This week, he finally shared that one school stands out on top.
When asked if the news was true about the Florida Gators being his leader right now, big Marcus Tatum didn’t hesitate.
“Yes sir, he said. “It’s just the home feeling and great connection with the whole staff.”
In fact the Florida staff has made him such a huge priority that four staff members are currently recruiting him hard. Head coach Jim McElwain, Daytona area recruiter Kerry Dixon, offensive line coach Mike Summers, and defensive line coach Chris Rumph all spend time talking to the young man.
Dixon seems to be the point man on his recruitment and Tatum thinks highly of the Gators’ receiver coach.
“Really cool!,” he exclaimed when asked about Coach Dixon. “And is very relatable, I can ask him stuff about college and how the transition is... He is a good source for info about all things not just football... He talked to me about his study habits that helped him and how he tried to set up his classes... just a very informative, cool, and relatable coach!”
Tatum would be considered the closing piece to the Gator offensive line class which includes center Brett Heggie, guard Branton Autry, tackle Stone Forsythe. He has also been shown how important he is to the staff.
“The last time I brought up something on that aspect... I asked coach Dixon ‘how important am I to you guys’ because that was when I decided I wasn't ready to pick somewhere before the season so I asked every coach from the top 8 that same question,” Tatum said. “Coach Dixon simply answered and said extremely important you are the number one tackle on our board and the talk of every meeting, and that we will wait till the end for you.”
With the Gators finally in the lead, Tatum still isn’t sure when he will make a final decision.
“No sir,” he said about a decision date. I’ve really just been focusing on my team… kind of forgot about recruiting for a while especially during camp. Whenever I feel the time is right... It was a mistake to say I was going to before the season.
He does list these five programs as teams he is still considering.
“Florida, Tennessee, Arkansas, Miami, and Alabama,” he said. “Alabama is coming back into the picture... starting to talk to coach Kiffin and coach Cristobal a lot more.”
