Gators making a move for 4-star TE Jacob Mathis

Tampa Berkeley Prep tight end Jacob Mathis is one of the best in the country at his position. The coveted pass catcher was in The Swamp Saturday as Florida shocked the world with a 38-10 win over number three Ole Miss. Mathis had a great time.

“It was enjoyable to watch,” he said moments after the game.  “The tight ends looked really good. The quarterback was on the money tonight. It was exciting as a recruit to see the offense perform the way they did and just see all the excitement around.”

Florida has been telling Mathis about their penchant for throwing the ball around to the tight end position and he has certainly seen that with his own eyes.

“It is exactly what I have been watching,” he said. “They obviously aren’t lying with the tight ends catching the ball so much. Everyone looked really good tonight. It was just exciting to watch.”

Scout.com asked Mathis if the Gators are making a move up for him at this time.

“Yeah, the coaches have been talking to me more than ever,” he said. “They write to me a lot and it’s nice to know they are taking the time to do that. (With the tight ends so active in the offense) that is always going to help.”

He says the schools of interest haven’t changed a whole lot.

“Same group of schools I have been looking at,” he said. “(Florida), Michigan, Georgia, Ole Miss, Alabama, Virginia Tech, and I’ve just kind of been open to whoever has been talking to me.

“I’m going on an official to Michigan next week. I will probably take an official to Florida after the season.  Ole Miss is another school I will take a visit to after the season.”

As to when he might decide on a school, don’t hold your breath, but you just never know.

“It will probably go all the way to signing day, but if something happens, then something happens,” he said.
